Mailing list for updates

This is not really a game play sugguestion.

I was wondering if there is any mailing list or other notification service that will make me aware of future updates?

Note, that I'm not asking when the next update is, and don't expect an answer to that question (although a progress blog from the dev would be really nice)

It's just that I don't tend to hang around forums or check unchanging web-sites very much, and I believe it's been over a month since the last update, and that there'll probably be a month or so until the next one.

I'll probably loose interest by then, but I'll still want to try out any updates that are released.

If there isn't a mailing list, can someone please start one?

maelstrom is right. It doesnt really change anything :???: its a good idea and all but... i just dont think theres much point

I dont think it would change much. I mean, instead of checking mail, you check the website now. What exactly changes?

Well, I have my mail client automatically check my mail every day, generally every minute. I'm notified when there's new mail so I look at it (auto synch pda).

I don't check the web sites of the umpteen games that I play every day, because that would mean an extra umpteen actions eating up all my precious gaming time.

In 3 months time I'll have forgotten about this website, but I won't have forgotten about my email. Receiving an email to tell me there's new content will remind me about the web site and get me to play the game again.

I don't see how you guys can not understand why this idea has merit. I hope trav doesn't feel like he's talking to a brick wall.

Yeah, a game like this could really benefit from a mailing list. The only problem is, who would run it? I know armagan must be way to busy to do it. If there was an automated mailer where all he had to do was cut and paste the patch description into an email and press a single button to send it off, it might work.

=$= Big J Money =$=

There are heaps of free automatic group mail programs.

http://groups.yahoo.com/

You need to set up a yahoo account, which is kind of lame but you can put non yahoo emails into the group, so once the setup is done it's easy.

Ask google for more, there's millions of solutions

and if anyone runs linux
http://sourceforge.net/projects/mailman
would be a pretty easy one to run.

Hell, I could probably code up a simple j2ee app to run it myself.

I think that's it. The purpose wouldn't be to mail a lot of stuff, simply to send an email every time there is an update. armagan could include the same comments that he uses in his forum announcements, if he desired. There are probably many people out there demoing the game who do not ever enter these boards at all, we never see them, and armagan has no influence over them. A mailing list would help him with that crowd. I don't think it would be anything that we here on the boards would benefit as much from; not unless people get bored and leave, which happens occasionally, I'm sure.

Yeah, it's like Big J said. Probably of no use to people who already hang out on the boards, but lots of use to the people who don't.

The more people who are paying attention to the game, the more they're talking about it to their friends, the more people who know about it, the more people who are buying it, the better it is for the devs.

I wasn't thinking of a newsletter, most people would find that annoying. I was thinking of closer to a "new download available" mailout. almost zero extra effort, and you'd get a far greater number of people playing your game

I belive this phpBB forum has mass mail option?

so... uhh... Has this been seen by anyone who can actually implement it yet?

Cause I'd really love a response (almost as much as a release)

I dont know if everyone enters their emails here but when there is a new update, i think admins can do a mass-mail for everyone to notice. Less work, and same effect, if i got it right.

Yeah, that sounds good, but I'd really like for one of the admins to post to let us know that's a plan. As far as I'm aware that's not currently being done

so... um, apparantly there was an update 01/10... Sounds like a great excuse to try out that whole "mail out" feature.

I almost missed it, only noticed because a friend mentioned it to me.
