M&B Item Editor - Attach amature

What is the attach amature tick box for in this item editor? I have tried ticking the box and without, but no noticeable difference. Boots seem to have this box ticked most of the time...

Tried unticking that box and rigged boots still work normally. No weird skeletal animation, etc.

I've also been using some mods where body armor and boots are combined meshes so I use the item as body armor and cover legs but not hair option, without ticking attach amature. Tried attaching amature. No difference.
 
Wtf, I was told attach armature doesn't work for rigging helmets....but it does since I just did it.

which means you can make chainmail coifs, a gasmask with an oxygen line leading to a tank
maybe even fix the neck sticking out problem (although that would take some time and might not even work because it isn't a normal object....I'll test it out since it has bothered me from day one.)

narp the skins file doesn't seem to recognize itp_attach_armature, but still works fine with helmets.
 
yeah, I think somebody tried rigging helmets before with that option, and it worked ok.  But I believe the problem was the height or angle of the helmet changed when you were mounted (or something like that) so they didn't think it was all that usable....

edit:  here's the thread, Dain also used that flag for his OSP Cloaks pack to have them animate as you walk
