As elected and approved list-posters, it's a deep honour for OGL and myself to present to the community the work of a secretive team of artisan list-makers.

First, a short foreword about the lists from me:

Sometimes it's not easy to read about the opinion others have of you. Nobody has applied to have their in-game contributions and achievements reduced to a bullet point in a tier list. The Player Listing process is completely non-consensual. If your rating seems lower than you expect or you're not listed at all, it might feel an unjust and unsolicited blow to the ego and an attack on however many years you've competed at warband.

However, you don't actually have to be offended by it or take it personally. Remember that this is a work of opinion, informed by lengthy personal experience playing with and against different players. Although the shadowy list-artisans have made great efforts to provide an objective ranking, it will also be coloured by their personal experience at least as much as match statistics. The collective opinion of list-masons who've been strong competitors through all the eras detailed below is far more interesting and useful to me, but there is some more information about their rating methods etc below.

I don't fully agree with the lists below. It would be silly to pit my warband memory against these list-makers, who seem to have some preternatural ability to pluck from memory decade-old results of no significance and performances good and bad by players I've long forgotten. However, if I did, some of the list would be different - for example, some IG players such as Lugh and Illuminati, who were instrumental in IG's success during The Age of Istiniar (see below), don't feature in any of the lists. I only know about them because I was there, in that team, and the unnamed list-wrights were not.

Not being listed by some unknown list-craftspeople, however expert, can't cheapen your past experience in competitive warband. Those you've played with know your true skill level and the input you have on a team better than anyone.

On to the lists. To understand this (and upcoming future works) you have to understand the now widely accepted Official categorization of eras, so that's where we'll begin:

Early Competitive

Tournaments
European Native Pro League
European Native League, Season 1

Description
The birth of competitive warband. At this point the scene was quite seperated out into it's international sections with juggernaut teams from Turkey, Poland and CIS regions competing with unified European teams such as 22nd, CoR and IG. 22nd were the dominant force picking up the win in the ENPL and losing out on the first season of the ENL to CoR, with the likes of Nubijuki, RelaX and Captain Lust, on round difference. Teams such as RS, Wolves and REF were making big moves but failed to convert these into tournament victories. Guard of Istiniar would come close, losing out in the finals of the ENPL and then dropping out of the ENL even though they were considered one of the tournament favourites.

Tournaments
European Native League, Season 2
European Native League, Season 3

Description
With 22nd leaving the scene a power vacuum was left at the top, one quickly filled by Guard of Istiniar. The other top team, CoR lost a couple of their top players leaving IG, with their fearsome array of talent, to become the kings of Warband. With multiple top tier duelists and incredible organisation they were largely dominant during this period. The creation of two super teams also marks the era as an important one. RNGD were created by Nubijuki and had many of the scene's best French players such as Peter, Tobi and Asgeir, later on recruiting fearsome CIS players such as ContyS, Lares and Mr Nobody. RNGD missed out on claiming victory in the second season of the WNL, losing their final game to, the kings of the era, IG. The third and final season of the ENL saw the entrance of two more super teams. Trinity entered Division A as a collection of 3 polish clans, Zelipapa, PE and WVs. They started in spectacular fashion, thrashing IG but, after being upset by Inquisition, saw their lead at the top of the table disappear as the implosion of RNGD gave IG the win they needed to secure another tournament victory, despite IG losing many of their best players to the final new super team of the era. Participating in Division C, Apis Europae formed taking many of the best players from IG and the rest of the scene.

Golden Age

Tournaments
Warband Native League, Season 1
Warband Native League, Season 2

Description
This period started with the end of an era and the start of one as Lust's last tournament, the ENSC, was won by Apis Europae. With IG greatly diminished it was left up to AE and RNGD to do battle for the crown in Goliath's newly created WNL. A true European super team, AE had run to a comfortable victory in Division C and went into the tournament as joint favourites with RNGD and another new super team, Union. Union was a conglomerate of two of Turkey's finest teams Calaquendi and 3OA. Boasting some of the strongest cavalry and archers in the scene, as well as a super solid infantry line-up they caused AE's first competitive defeat and knocked RNGD out in the semis, eventually falling to a Crusader inspired Apis Europae in the Grand Final. Just below the top tier CIS team Unvanquished brought together many of the best players from the region and were always capable of calling upsets and whilst IG were diminished they remained a real threat. 22nd's foray back into competitive native started strongly but collapsed quickly leaving teams like SRC, SoE and Legend fighting just below the top. Streaming had become a big deal and there were many huge matches covered by Warband Battlestream and then later MB_TV. With so many top teams and a multitude of quality teams just beneath it was a time when the WNL could boast nearly 50 teams.

Early Modern Competitive

Tournaments
European Championship Series, Season 1
Warband Native League, Season 3
Warband Native League, Season 4

Description
The birth of the ECS began a renewed focus on top level competitive Warband. Apis Europae were considered the best team in the scene but alongside old foes Renegades, Inquistion and Guard of Istiniar a new foe would rise during the ECS, KURWA. KURWA became the second super team in Europe and would offer intense competition to Apis Europae, seeing them to their first tournament defeat by winning Season 3 of the WNL. Apis Europae would claim victory in the other tournaments, with most of the KURWA players participating with Irish Rebels during Season 4 of the WNL. Alongside those two, teams such as Inquisition remained an ever present threat. They claimed a victory against Apis Europae in Season 4 of the WNL , playing alongside fellow CIS team Heroes, but would later fall off after then being defeated by them. Teams such as Castellans, Legend, Irish Rebels, Teutonic Knights, Saracens and Guard of Istiniar would remain forces below but would rarely offer real menace to KURWA or AE.

The Three Kings

Tournaments
European Championship Series, Season 2
Warband Native League, Season 5

Description
The Three Kings era, named after the dominant teams of the era, is widely considered the most hotly contested era of native Warband. After their performances in the first season of the ECS and their victory in the 3rd season of the WNL, KURWA had joined Apis Europae at the top of the scene. The ECS's second season would welcome a third team to that set, when Napoleon brought the best players of his Sons of the Emperor side together with a core of Europe's most dangerous players to form Freelancers. The three sat comfortably at the top of the scene and swatted aside all opposition in the ECS until they came up against each other. Apis Europae knocked out KURWA in the semi finals only to fall to a narrow defeat to Freelancers in the final. The tournament after would be the 5th season of the Warband Native League. The teams traded losses in the regular season. Apis Europae defeated Freelancers in the quarter finals and would have a clear run at the finals after legendary French outfit Unity pulled of an huge upset to knockout KURWA. Apis Europae would gain their fourth WNL title in this era. Just below the Three Kings teams such as Irish Rebels, Unity (Legend) and Castellans were dominant, whilst it also saw the rise of teams like Aequalitas. Defenders of Wonwokie also remained an ever present during this period.

Late Modern Competitive

Tournaments
European Championship Series, Season 3
Warband Masters Tour, Season 2
Warband Pro League, Season 2

Description
Late Modern Competitive would see a sea change in how teams were formed, with many moving from the traditional clan to making tournament specific teams. It would also see the second season of the WPL with it's large prize pool span the Atlantic ocean.
KURWA and Freelancers would go into the 3rd season of the ECS as hot favourites with the absence of Apis Europa from the tournament. Freelancers eventually came out as winners against KURWA, securing their second ECS championship. With the end of the third season of the European Championship Series, the scene underwent great change. Both KURWA and Freelancers dissolved their rosters, with some of their players completely turning their back on the game. The remaining players from both teams would then form a new team under the name Random Force, with the aim of maintaining a counterbalance to Apis Europae at the top of the scene. Directly behind these two were Aequalitas, Wonwokie, Irish Rebels and Castellans, several teams with the genuine upset potential. A re-strengthened Polish Eagles and Geese Pack completed the extended top tier.
However it was not only teams that underwent changes but also the tournaments themselves. With the Warband Masters Tour and the Warband Pro League, new tournament formats were created for the first time since the creation of the WNL and the ECS more than three years ago. In both tournaments the above mentioned top tier succeeded in reaching the Knockout Stages in full strength. The upset potential amongst these top teams was highlighted when Castellans overcame a much favoured Random Force, only to be later overcome by Polish Eagles. In the end, however, none of these teams managed to become a danger for Apis Europae in the decisive tournament matches. They would once more confirm themselves as Kings of Europe with a total of only four lost rounds in two finals.

Late Competitive

Tournaments
Warband Summer Cup, Season 1
Warband Native League, Season 6
Warband Summer Cup, Season 2
Warband Winter Cup, Season 1
Warband Native League, Season 7

Description
Late Competitive would be an era marked for the ever changing teams at the top of the scene, with many players reforming to make different teams on a tournament by tournament basis. It would also be the era in which the Nations Cup would slowly crumble in it's original format, with many nations no longer able to properly compete. After more than half a year without a team tournament due to the length of the 2017 Nations Cup, the first season of newly created Warband Summer Cup started in August 2018. The era of late competitive Warband also saw the rise of the last super team Frontline Tactics which had been created by Charlini. Meanwhile, French team Unity has become significantly stronger, and together FT and a weakened Apis Europae side, formed the top trio of the scene. It was also Unity who, for the first time in their history, denied Apis Europae a place in a tournament final by narrowly beating them in the semi finals before falling to champions Frontline Tactics in the final.
The Warband Native League, now in its sixth season, made its comeback after an almost two year hiatus. Frontline Tactics and Unity were considered the strongest teams, with Apis Europae and Guess Who's Back, the spiritual successors of Freelancers, following behind. GWB caused an upset by heavily defeating Apis Europae in the second week in what was expected to be an evenly balanced match, and also went on to knockout French juggernauts Unity before being stopped by Frontline Tactics in the knockout stage. Apis Europae would regain their strength over the course of the tournament and eventually went on to defeat the Frontline Tactics in the final, laying claim tho their 5th WNL title.
The start of the second season of the Warband Summer Cup also marked the start of the second half of the late competitive era, and saw a relatively big shift at the top of the scene as both Frontline Tactics and Unity underwent a considerable amount of roster changes. Meanwhile, Apis Europae decided to take a break from competitive play, and saw a portion of their players team up with the other top teams in the scene. Some of KURWA's played would form GR to create a clear top 3 of FT, Unity and GR. Following behind this top trio were long time heavy hitters Defenders of Wonwokie and Aequalitas who met each other in the semi finals after Wonwokie managed to defeat Unity. On the other side of the bracket Frontline Tacticed managed to overcome GR and would later go on to win the tournament in a relatively onesided final against Aequalitas.
After a short break for the Nations Cup, Polish host Aharo created the Warband Winter Cup. Drawing inspiration from the Battle of Bucharest LAN event it would have a limited roster size and a reduced player count of 6 vs 6. With Unity taking a break and GR disbanding the scene again saw a large shift at the top. Next to Frontline Tactics the favourites were now Dopey and MIKSTURA. Due to the format of the tournament with the semi finals and the final being played on the same day, the community got to witness an action packed evening as Frontline Tactics managed to take down Mikstura before falling to Dopey in a hotly contested final.
With the start of the seventh iteration of the Warband Native League, the community also saw the return of its former match and team formats, and a shift in focus to a wider appeal for the whole community. As such, the tournament split teams into three divisions based on their perceived strength as it was last done in the 3rd season of the WNL. Division A went back and forth between the three favourites House Tully, an Apis Europae led team, Main Eleven and returning French juggernauts Unity. In the end House Tully would claim victory after a strong showing in the finals against Unity.

Disclaimer
Competiting in online competitive Mount & Blade is easier said than done. Over the course of the games lifespan, thousands of players have tried it, but only a small portion of them has had that spark of competitive drive within them that made them stay and consistently compete with and against others. For that alone, every player that has played this game competitively is special and extraordinary in our minds. Every player we know in competitive play has his or her own story, something that makes them stand out in their own right but that probably only their closest circle of teammates and friends know more about.

Judging the competitive scene of a game with a lifespan of nearly ten years is, understandably, an incredibly difficult task, especially with the limited amount of resources the community has produced over its lifetime that would make a task such as this easier. Recordings of matches barely cover 10% of the total amount of matches that were played (rough estimate) whilst statistics were first properly conducted in 2015. Especially the lack of statistics for the earlier tournaments makes it extremely difficult for an all time list such as this one to fairly compare players from these earlier era with players from later ones.

Therefore, our secret group of listcrafters has had to use their own, most likely blurred, memories of these forgotten gods in order to rate them. That, however, does not mean there is no basis to back up our assessment of their talent. Some of the old tournaments still have a significant amount of match score screenshots up. Reviewing those alongside old footage from various channels and balancing that against our own memories gave us an adequate understanding of what the scene looked like back all those years.

What makes sense one of the greatest then? Attempts to answer this question have filled articles, books and videos in all fields where humans engage in competition, and even fields where humans don't engage with the primary aspect of competing it is brought up on a regular basis. When looking at examples of fully fleshed our (e-)sports, we noticed three things: Firstly, people try to define a set of criteria that is supposed to reflect the complexity of the given task in their fields. Secondly, the element of time plays a vital role because it adds context and meaning. And thirdly, unless a certain criteria is directly measured in statistics, the assessment of the greatness of someone is and always will be subjective. And even if a certain criteria is directly measured by statistics, the evaluation and importance of that criteria compared to the other ones is subjective.

Therefore, as it was already outlined when this list was first posted: This list tries its best to be just and fair when assessing the greatness of players in Warband, but it is almost certainly flawed due to the subjective nature of the evaluation process. Thus, should you find yourselves not agreeing with your rating, do not worry. You know best what you have achieved, what way you have come in the game, and nobody will ever be able to take that away from you. We certainly did not intend to harm your feelings or tried to belittle the success you have had playing the game.

What makes someone one of the best of all time?
This takes us back to the set of criteria that we just mentioned above. The criteria that are always established before rating greatness. In the case of Warband, we have mainly looked at the following criteria in order to assess the greatness of a player: Raw mechanical ability, gamesense and awearness, ability to teamplay and communicate, clutch and fear factor, dominance of the player compared to the other players of their class, importance of the era relative to other eras, longevity, success and last but not least the importance of the player within their team.

Based on our understanding of these terms, that will most likely be congruent with the understanding of most but certainly not all players, we tried to rate every player in all these categories. As you can see, the statistics that have been gathered since 2015 won't tell you the fully story, at least not in the system we just described above. Most of the categories are not reflected at all, whereas others, for example, the amount of kills someones has gotten might give you an idea of their raw mechanical ability, but certainly not a clear, objective assessment.

For all those interessted to conduct actual statistical work based on our concept: We are fully aware some of the categories have a high positive correlation. For example should a player be hugely dominant compared to the other players of their class in an era, their fear factor is most likely equally high. We adjusted for those cases by reducing the importance of one of the categories relative the others.

Resources
We used the following resources when putting together this all time list. These resources are not only aimed at those who enjoy the art of list craftsmanship, but everyone who loves and enjoys watching competitive Mount & Blade, so please make sure you check out what we have provided below.

Looks great, fantastic list overall!

A quick note from my side on the BeNe dream team. While I appreciate being put in the dream team commander spot, that spot should belong to tomy as he did the majority of (important) calling.

If anything, THIS is the ultimate list, the standard is now set high for any of the future ones, it's also a pleasure to think of everything on that list. Every player you have once seen on a server or played a match against. You can't even say when is the last time some of them have been online or where they are now. That just shows how big and old of a community we really are. Great work nonetheless, hopefully you have enough time and energy to finish what you started. Would be also great to remember that it's not only M that has worked on this, even though he seems to be the representative here.

Wow, a very detailed and accurate list... Thanks for making this must of taken many hours of hard work.
I have a question about the all time rating on players, are they based on a certain era or are they based on when that player was at his/her peak? (other factors too i guess)

10/10 List. Would be so cool to see a NC with the "Dream Team" Players on it from every country.

I've been juked from my rightful tier 2 all-time spot, didn't realise playing in top teams since 2016 as a main infantry, having gold, silver and bronze medals and slaying men means being placed in tier 3, yeah Varadin could destroy anything I've ever done. It's very easy to say 'don't get offended', 'it's based on opinion' but when the list was made seriously, and posted by a respected member of the community then obviously people will feel their ratings are unjust, in that sense, the 'list artisans' you've mentioned, although didn't provide any names for completely no reason, haven't really justified the reasons for some of the ratings. You can quite easily be placed somewhere based solely on someone's personal quarrels. If you're saying these 'people' were hard at work, it's unfair to say that the list is accurate if the majority of that time was spent collecting players, figuring out teams from the past and where they stand and give solely an opinion based on something completely personal. Demeaning players by clearly giving no justification on some of the clear anomalies in the rankings is clearly unjust to players and unlawful with Taleworld's policy.

Being a 'powerful' and respected member of the community, by posting some of the most garbage ratings without your 'real' approval seems odd, you even stated yourself that you, don't agree with some of the ratings, but decided to let it go. A lot of people look at these sort of ratings from respected community members and take them as if that's their final skill, unjust or not, thus completely demeans some of the players who should rightfully be placed higher, based on anything from statistics to global community opinion. Of course, you don't see many 'complaints' on the thread for reasons which are clear, they don't want to flame someone with a lot of respect, they don't want list threads to go down the drain, but without any form of elucidation with the rankings, what's the point in even posting a list? Sure, the thread looks fantastic, but it's a complete waste of time without any form of justification, which is exactly what Taleworld's asked for, you decided to post a thread solely based on 'opinion' which most people take very seriously. There also seems to be no negotiation based on statistics because it's an 'opinion' list, which completely defeats the purpose of community opinion, it's basically a what you say goes dictatorship.

Demeaning players by completely pulling information and opinions out your arse, doesn't give enough justification on players. I think there's some very obvious player who shouldn't be where they are, people will clearly look at this list and assume that's their skill level and recruit them, I think the list is great when it comes to history and clan ratings, I'm not flaming the amount of work put into the thread, it's just there's a lot of grey areas in some of the list ratings. Trying to discuss this with OGL was like talking to a brick wall, completely providing no reasons as to why I'd be placed in tier 3, giving the reply of 'study more' and Mork clearly having no interest in discussion. Obviously I complain often, but rightfully so on a list solely based on opinion and from the people I've talked to they also see how there's some major anomalies and just general rubix-like scrambling. Even if I provided statistics and prove it, it doesn't matter because it's all based on opinion and all I'd have to do is be friends with you from the start, which is how the original lists came with major flame.

I don't fully agree with the lists below.

Then don't post it then, considering it's your list, having help from your 'artisans' sounds like Calamity. You even gave an example how you'd change your 'own' list but then proceed to not give any input and change it, as if these people actually checked statistics at all, that's outrageous. I could provide you a 10000 word essay on how players like Varadin who's played in low tier teams is not in tier 3, could also provide statistics on players like CristoTheVicious not being tier 1 or myself to be placed in tier 2, but you wouldn't want that would you? It's a list based solely off opinion after all. It's a bit silly really. You've also got to think of the fact you're basing all the players on the same skill level, through the years when clearly a 'tier 1' player in 2012 will most certainly he tier 5 now, which is where the list doesnt really make any sense because theres no context behind the placements. A 2019 tier 3 player in that all time list could completely dominate a tier 1 2012 player, so why do they deserve to be the top? The meaning of 'All-Time' is who's the best and whose the worse, taking into account the skill level at that period of time, I.E Tier 1 players in 2012 shouldn't be placed as tier 1 all-time but would be lower than the average tier 3 player. 'All-Time' should take into account the peak skill level and base it off that, not some wumbo jumbo from different years, it makes the list completely inaccurate. It would be fair to make a list by era, but an All-Time list doesnt really make sense, or atleast the way you've done it.
