Low lvl troops

Hey i noticed a problem for me. When i hire or find troops from prisoners that are low lvl like peasant women or farmers they always just run up and die in the first battle making it kinda hard to lvl up and upgrade so i was wondering if anyone have any good tips for me how to keep my troops alive?

Choose your battles carefully. During low levels you should fight only with river pirates. Then you can proceed to mountain and forest bandits.
Use troop commands during battle. Check the controls menu for commands. Press 1 (hold position) when the battle starts. Go ahead and kill a few enemies and give damage them as much as possible. Then you can command charge (press 3). Don't let your soldiers separate. Group them together with commands 1 and 2. Before your troops have contact with enemy, distract some of the enemies (make them chase you but do not engage). Your troops will fight less enemies this way. Help your troops if they are in disadvantage (2 vs 5 etc.).

And check some of the stickies at the top of this page. They are very useful for new players.

1. engage river pirates
2. in the beginning order your troops to hold position '1'
3. ride forth and soften the pirates with ranged weapons.
4. order your troops to charge '3' and watch them finishing the pirates off

If you see your peasants in combat with an enemy drop an arrow in his ass or ride him down. I prefer charging the enemy because you're less likely to steal the kill and your troops will get a couple cheap shots in before he can get up.

Also try to not let your troops get seperated too much. If they're all over the map it's hard to protect them - use your follow me command to regroup.

Increase your Surgery skill. It changes a percentage of the killing blows on your troops into knock-out blows.

This skill is great, I agree. It's just hard to raise it to proper level (3 and up) at lower character levels.

I would also add that every time possible you should fight the battles yourself. At the earlier levels don't auto-solve them, because you really can't have a huge advantage in tactics or surgery skill and you end up getting more of your men killed. Letting computer calculate your losses usually only make them worse than if you fought "manually".

But I guess this hint probably was a matter of course anyway.
