Low fps

Users who are viewing this thread

In the beginning i had no problems and could play the largest battles with no problems but recently i started to get low fps and even a middle sized battle is a pain. How could this be?

I remember in the Configuration file you should set the buffer size to a different number than the amount of memory you actually have, the lowest? I don't recall, but it seemed to improve FPS by nearly eliminating all slow-downs, since I don't remember what to set it to, mine is at the 256 recommended, which does give me a slow down depending on the map and number of enemies on my screen.

EDIT: Confirmed, using the lowest buffer size (14) gives me better FPS for some reason, or I just haven't tested enough...

Check the configuration file, especially the video options. Make sure they are set to your hardware (don't worry, they're self documented).

It's probably also a good idea to make sure nothing else is running at the same time. You might also want to run an antivirus and anti-spyware scan.

Failing that, try defragmenting the drive and emptying out the temp directory. You'd be surprised how big a hit they can cause.

Buffer size is alerady at minimum

Allegro,

Have you changed anything since these slowdowns started appearing? Version change or anything?

I just updated the game as new versions got released but i started facing this problem before my first update
I dont think this is a bug, i think it is about my computer.

What graphics card do you have, or more importantly how much memory does it have? Check in Dxdiag (start -> run -> DXDIAG -> video) and set the ini file to reflect this. Putting the buffer size to minimum on a 256Mb card will produce lower performance than it should.

Also, what version of Windows do you have?

Geforce FX 5600 with 128 mb memory and i am using windows xp
It happens like this, i load and start my game, i have 140 fps or so i turn my head and face a more detailed area and it drops to 60.

Render buffer size should be set to 20

It may also help to turn off the pixel shaders (set to 0)

Try setting max FPS to 60 while you're there (actually, FPS of 60 shouldn't cause slowdown, its just over the maximum that the human eye can see).

Also, try closing down all background apps (start -> run -> msconfig -> startup -> disable all -> ok and reboot). Should up the framerate slightly.

Also ... you might want to check for spyware. You can go to: http://www.lavasoftusa.com/software/adaware/ and download the latest version of Ad-Aware SE Personal ... it is the best free spyware removal tool I have found and is simple to use.

generally he shouldn't let the game limit the fps. he should use vertical synchronization to sync the games frames with his monitors refreshes
thus putting it somewhere between 60 and 85 for LCD and 60-200 for CRT 85hz is the recomended minimum refreshrate to avoid flickering and headaches (the game fps can be lower though).
LCD displays can get away with lower rates than CRT since they are updated differently (thus flickering isn't a big issue on those)

I have recently installed hundred years mod, in a strange way i face fps problem in only native mod, well in very crowded battles in hundred years mod too but in native mod i even face this problem in arena.

I was about to post about having this same problem with the latest version, had it all typed out, but.. I tried a clean install and that seems to have fixed the problem. ie I uninstalled and deleted all the old files first, and for whatever reason that has fixed it. Even though the download page says "The new installation will overwrite your configuration and option files.". Anyway, all good now, back to trying some of those mods.
