LotR Weapons

Users who are viewing this thread

Hi all,

I was just wondering if someone could make, or has already made, a set of Lord of the Rings weapons? You could possibly use some which were made for Neverwinter Nights, but I'm not sure.

Their are plenty of pics and things all over the web of the weapons from the movies including many kinds of bows and crossbows, shields, all kinds of swords, spears and axes. I can post some pics if people are interested. Though that is where my involvement would cease to be useful, though I could specify speeds, damage and range for bows and things.

Thanks,
Lonely Soldier

Im doing a LOTR mod..... I think. At the moment Tolkien lawyers are doing a sweep of the net and passing out "cease and desist" emails. Not a good time really for a tolkien mod but we'll see. It will probably be a short-lived push.

Ive got a collection of artwork with specific items Im looking to get someone to model. Ill post them later tonight. In general its best to stay away from the movie stuff as thats just a second set of lawyers to worry about. Weapons might not be so bad but in my mod Im going to try and avoid using movie stuff.

I guess if it is a freeware mod with your own items (that you created) you will be fine and nobody will bother.

If Tolkien really ****s with people, his father should descent from heaven (the real Tolkien, not his ****ty son Chris) and stomp him, because Tolkien stated that with his mythology he wanted to create something that others could build on.

Cool, hopefully some others will volunteer some models as well. Ill post a thread with the examples I like when I get to my laptop.

Hahahah, that's ****ing hilarious.
"Dad, you're... you're back!"
"Son, I've come back with a mission."
"What is it, dad? Have I not been doing a good enough job of protecting your work?"
"No, you dumb ****, you needs tah back off!"
*STOMPARZ*

AFAIK it's not Christopher Tolkien himself that goes batty about legal issues with LoTR content. From what I've seen (i.e. his attempts to publish his father's further languages and information *for free*) he's actually quite reasonable about it.

Why? The only example of a mod being closed down is that of MEmod for morrowind which wasnt even contacted by Tolkien lawyers. THEY contacted the Tolkien lawyers and asked if it was legal, then closed down when they got the obvious answer. Duh! Some people said that the team leader just wanted an excuse to stop.

There have been tolkien mods for other game series (that will remain nameless) going for years.

The current Tolkien crackdown seems aimed at sites providing links to copies of middle earth roleplaying rules and modules. A specific copyright thing.

The Morrowind mod was also one of those ridiculously large mods that takes years to complete and never gets anywhere. A basic tolkien mod for M@B could be assembled in a few weeks. As more models are added it would grow slightly but never be on the scale of a Morrowind TC. If legal entities take an interest Ill just change the names and make it another "tolkien inspired" fantasy setting. No big deal.

My thoughts exactly.

Here are some shields:

Some Helmets:

And all the other pics of swords can be found here:

There is also some more stuff on the LotR website (lordoftherings.net) with pics of more standard weapons, like Rohirrim and Gondorian swords, spears and bows.

Yeah, im going to do one. Ill post a thread tonight with the artwork of weapons and armor I like. Mostly from pre movie artists. Hopefully a few people will kick in.

Sounds good.

Are you going to make a storyline? I dont really care , just curious

Or just weapons / armor , etc ?

I think remaking some towns would be pretty cool , although that could be tedius as the towns tend to be oversized in LotR , or atleast always look like some god made them lol.

WipperSnipper - I think we should start with the weapons and armour only, perhaps moving on to a map, though putting the story of the books or films is probably unnecessary.

Ancientwanker - will that be as well as this one or replacing this one. Its just that I'd like to see the designs of the film, as those of previous artists (other than Alan Lee and John Howe) tend to be to fantastical in my opinion.

LynX - Great!

Some movie influence might be ok but in general thats just another set of lawyers to worry about. Angus McBride, the artist I have in my thread, has some fantastical elements for his tolkien stuff but he is primarily a historical illustrator who never did much middle earth stuff. Most of the arms and armor are inspired by real designs. Even the orcs are wearing a version of roman armor.

A direct copy of all the movie stuff for my mod? no way. Too many fingers in that pie; EA, Tolkien Estate, Peter Jackson...

We had a big stink here last week with book vs movie when TYR modelled an uruk 'scimitar' for this mod. Id prefer to stick with original stuff or stuff inspired by older art but some vague movie inspired stuff is ok. If I need to change the theme, it will be just a matter of changing names, poof, new mod.

Are you going to make a storyline?

Yeah, already worked it out and have the code sketched out for the important parts using the current code system as a guide. The current code system will be replaced by the mod tools wrapper but the logic will be the same.

Theres really only one operation im reallly banking on being in there, the rest of the new stuff will be gravy.
