lost battle = lost heroes?

I can't find them, I had 6 friends, wasted a lot on their equipment.
Attacked a big army by accident and lost, is there a way to get them back?

They should all respawn in random taverns, eventually.

Do you know that for a fact? They keep their equipment, right? I don't feel like buying/looting random crap for them again...

Yes, I have done it myself a few times now and they seem to have all their equipment with them.

He'll tell you for free that he has seen your companion at X tavern.

I dont like this feature.  I think it should be like before and they just end up in your party afterwards.
