Losing siege while I still had many troops?

How does the siege troop amount work? I was just sieging Valucia, and was followed by about 800 troops. Valucia had a garrison of 150 and a count with 80. We lost the siege after my allies and I had lost about 250 killed and wounded, and Valucia had lost about 200. So the defender was allowed to use their full force in defence, while I lost after having only gone through roughly 1/3 of my troops?

The number of reinforcement waves is limited.  It goes both ways.  They can kill all your allowed reinforcements and win, and you can do the same, either while defending or attacking.

In field battles you just have another round, in sieges you spawn with few troops against remaining defenders in a "last-stand" map or two.  If you successfully defend your fortress against enemy attack, they will usually continue the siege and storm again.

But I thought if this was the case, it would utilize some sort of ratio modifier. As in, if I was able to have 800, they 200, it's 4:1. So I should have say .. 4x80, while they got 4x20. As it does with large armies in the field. I suppose perhaps slightly reduced ratio to make things fair... That can not have been the case when they've depleted essentially all their men and I've just got a few.

In the very least not having to rebuild my siege tower, which is the reason why I got annoyed. It delayed the combat long enough for their marshal party to arrive and kick my reduced and battered ass

This modifier you are talking about is probably Battle Advantage.  It works in game, just not exactly how you intuitively expected.  Initially you spawn with different ratios of troops according to opposing numbers plus this modifier.  Then the size of reinforcement waves are influenced by it too.  It works fine, actually.  You just need to be prepared.

well, if that's the way it is, all one can do is prepare for it I guess. Though I'm not sure I would say it works fine, when a nearly 1:4 ratio turned into nearly 1:1. As in all my dead was 250, all his troops were 200 dead plus whatever was left. which must have been more than 20. Just sounds strange to me, maybe a lord didn't end up joining the siege, though they were all standing there and I was the marshal.

Honestly, I just don't know how it could be done much better with the assumptions they were having when writing this game.  Usually the player is the one who pulls off those heroic defenses.  They feel great!  This time the AI got you.  Next time read more on tactics and give them the bloody nose.

Hint - there was no need for such big casualties on your side.
