Lorica Segmentata

Front and back.

I messed up a bit the "recent discovery" thing. Some spanish segmentata have been discovered and dated to the late IIIrd century, and there was also in the Danube regions some metal pieces in a early 5th century dig that could - or could not - have been segmentata. Still the general conception among specialists is that lorica segmentata didn't outlast the 3rd century.

You can clearly see soldiers in lorica segmentata on the southernmost side of the Arch.

Ooooooooh he gotcha!

Not really

I was wrong as this from the Arch of Constantine, but the arch was built re-using some ealier monuments, and this very part was depicting emperor Trajan's dacian wars. So that's late 1st/early 2nd century, not 4th century source. The rest of those soldiers equipement, like the gladius and its balteus, doesn't look late roman at all either. The late roman sword was the spatha from the 3rd century onwards, and it was a long sword, held in a scabbard on the left side unlike the earlier gladius.

hmm I'd say Lorica segmata was pretty flexible for the protection it provided... plus you still had plenty of room to move your arms around easily (something mail can make a challenge if its a little long on the arms and you've been wearing it for a good few hours )

Don't listen to him Dudro, he speaks in lies and heresy.
Cut out his tongue and put him to the stake, and give me my lorica segmentata.

My tong speaks the truth. And before cutting it, you will taste my sword... Which is a spatha
