Lords of the Realm 2

Years ago when I was fairly new to PC gaming, I used to be addicted to this game.  By the time I had played it, it was already old, having come out in like 1994 or somesuch, when I was only 6.  It's not the most complicated game, but it has a few features on it that keep it "deep" enough to make it interesting.  To this day, I have yet to find a strategy game that compels me to play it as much as I did Lords of the Realm 2, and I still keep a copy on my HDD (it's free now, but you'll need DOS box installed to run it apparently).  Years back when LotR 3 came out, I picked it up, but ended up quitting 5 mins into the game as it was just rubbish to me.

Anyone else a fan of this awesome old game?

It's a good game but lacks some features that Lords I had IMO...like full freedom in castle building for instance - a feature which I found to be major. And of course it lacks sheep

Good thing about it was that the food system was way better than in Lords 1...maybe even a bit too good even if you play with the full farm features cause it's not too hard to drown in grain.

As for the combat - it's a bit so-so. The whole figure representing X number of units was a poor system IMO - at least for small scale fights. If one figure represents 4 units you could pretty much win with 0 losses using archers...if it would represent 64 (for huge armies) however it would be bit more realistic - but at the same time tedious.

Never played Lords I, personally.  What was the "freedom of castle building"?  And the X figs to represent Y units also annoyed me, but it made lower end PC's of the time able to run it easily I guess.

You could design your own castles basically. Place walls, towers, gates, barracks and so on at your own leisure. The bigger and badder, the more resources/manpower it would take to complete obviously.

Oh okay, that's what I figured you meant.  Well, I liked the system they had in 2 well enough, though a DYI would be neat.

It would be AWESOME if someone did a remake of 2 with perhaps an upgraded combat system...

I can remember another game - Castles

It was a predesor of Stronghold.

I don't remember that much about playing this game, but one bit that does stick in my mind is how heartless the computer advisor sounded. Particularly the way in which he said, "Slaughter these villagers"?

I got Castles 2 sitting on my drive which I play with Dosbox every now and then...still rather fun as always...and hard as heck.

Played this when I was like...6, 7? Didn't quite fully understand the concept back then, but building my own kingdom was fun due to trade and...heck I can't really remember much of the game lol, all I know is I was very happy playing it. Cattle and ore lol, the 2 main resources of sustenance. And of course, buying hundreds of peasants and sending them to the slaughter of knights and archers. Good times.

I measure my games by how fond of them I am and how often I wish to replay them.

There are very few games where I go back and replay them just because they were FUN.

Lords of the Realm 2 was and is one of those games.  I'd play it non-stop for days on end.  I'd go through all the campaigns at least twice before tucking it away for a few years, where I'd pull it up and play it again.

There was something about that game.  It just had "it".
