Lords and their fiefs...

How is it decided if a lord keeps his fief if you capture them? is it a function of time, until the previous ruler re-assigns the fief? do they keep them forever, and if you get a lord w/o a fief, it's simply because they didnt have any to begin with? The reason i ask is because i captured a lord, and i didnt realise that he had previously had windholme, and i prefer my lord to have all of the cities, and it's WAY far from my base as it is now.

EDIT: if i understand the wiki correctly, it looks like only the 4 second in commands will carry their fiefs with them? that doesnt seem right, it seems like i get new fiefs whenever i capture and recruit a lord, more often than not.

If the Lord in question owns a castle or town and you capture and persuade him to join your most holy cause he´ll take his town or castle and attached villages with him.
If it´s a castle, he´ll keep both castle and village, if it´s a town, he´ll keep the town and the villages will go to Kingdom of Pendor (example).

If the lord in question just holds a village or two, he won´t be able to keep them when he joins you and his former fiefes will be awarded to more loyal members of your enemy.

"Citizens of Cez! Today is a great day. I, your most noble Governor, decided to swear an oath of everlasting fealty to my new overlord, the King of Pendor and give him this town with all the surrounding lands! You are now all honest citizens of the mighty King who unites Pendor!" sayeth the Lord.

"The Emperor paid better for my weapons. I will stay loyal to him!" answereth the weaponsmith.

"So will we!" screameth the populace.

"Ehem... I'm terribly sorry, my dear citizens, but alas that's not possible due to limitations of the game engine. You have to switch with me to the Kingdom of Pendor. Please take this quarter of a Qualis Gem as a consolidation." announceth the Lord.

"Screw the game engine. Screw the Qualis Gems. We revolt. We crash the game." cry the masses.

Now we know, who is responsible for all those crashes. The lord of Cez.

I've had similar things like that... "I am the new king of Pendo... WHAT THE!!!  Vertex buffer can't be initialized I command you as the King of Pendor to initialize that vertex buffer!"

Vertex Buffer: "You've been playing for an hour leave me alone!"

It takes a half hour to declare yourself king but only a few seconds for a game error to take it all away.

unless of course you have captured deities in your trunk then the game is afraid if you go away they will come reek havoc on the lands of Pendor

ok, so it takes 10 seconds to declare it, but about half an hour to get any pendorians to listen to you while you say it? (i mean, look at all the claiments running around visiting lords trying to get them to listen)

That's one of the things I've always thought strange about the claimants--they all seem to be lazy.  I mean, here I am, raising my own army and taking over my own piece of Pendor myself and they're sitting in a castle somewhere begging for someone to do it for them.  I don't know how feasible it would be, but it would be cool to see them raising their own armies and recruiting Lords, trying to take back their proper thrones themselves.  The various civil wars would make for a more interactive, living world.

The first part would be kinda easy, just turn the current random army spawns into the claiments. I dont know if it's possible to tweak the code enough to have them actually try to take and keep a city. another, nifty idea to this, would be, if whenever a faction gets destroyed, instead of the lords being randomly assigned, they start traveling around as mercs (like you start the game as) looking for a new king, and you can either approach them (as i've had done to me, with the empire offering me vassalage, i think, maybe it was a merc contract, out of the blue, or have them come to you asking to be a vassal.
