Looting Skill

I know looting obviously affects chance of getting cattle and the quantity (and quality?) of loot after a battle.  What I wasn't sure of is whether this skill effects the amount of cash you get when looting a village and also the amount of cash you get after battles and sieges. 

I did a search and only found information on equipment loot.

Anyway, some points in looting is a great way to earn some more cash when you're just starting off.

but some points in looting means less points spent in something more useful in the long run: money isn't that hard to come by in this game.

Personally, I never spent ONE point in money-related skills, except that few times when I tried to roleplay a merchant...

Which is the easiest way to earn money in the game, as long as you can find a merchant that has enough money to pay for 42 sacks of Spice

In that case do what I did and let one of your companions put some points on looting.

nah, I turn them all into horse javelineers, therefore they need all the skill points they can get!
