Sergeant
I've read tons of general tips on the forums, and I've got pretty much all of the game basics figured out. Right now I'm doing O.K. but I'd like some advice as to what I should be doing.

My character:
J'arteaux of Caen (yeah, I thought M&B was based in Europe, not the world of Calradia when I first started.)

Level 27
Health 54
Strength 12
Agility 15
Intelligence 12
Charisma 15

Trade = 0
Leadership = 5
Prisoner_management = 2
First_aid = 2
Surgery = 0
Wound_treatment = 4
Inventory_management = 4
Spotting = 0
Pathfinding = 0
Tactics = 4
Tracking = 0
Trainer = 2
Horse_archery = 1
Riding = 5
Athletics = 3
Shield = 3
Weapon_master = 5
Power_draw = 0
Power_throw = 0
Power_strike = 4
Ironflesh = 4

My proficiencies are:
One_handed_weapons = 241
Two_handed_weapons = 178
Polearms = 269
Archery = 104
Crossbows = 100
Throwing = 51

Marnid is my merchant, he has a trade skill of 5 now.
Borcha, my tracker has pathfinding and tracking of 6 now.

My strategy is pretty straight forward... I'm using reinforced black armor, reinforced black helmet, reinforced gauntlets and reinforced iron greaves. I'm riding a spirited charger, and I've been using a battlefork for piercing and couching, and a bastard sword for a one hander along with my reinforced heater shield. Basically I use all this heavy armor to charge, break their formation with a little couching, then switch to my sword and shield once my 44 or so troops catch up.

I have about 17 Swadian Knights, 10 Swadian sharpshooters, 4 Swadian men at arms, 2 Swadian infantry, 4 Swadian sergeants, 1 hunter woman, 2 fighter women.

The Swadians now recognize me as a knight... (Isn't that title supposed to come with land?  :mad:)

I also have 2 free attribute points, skill points and about 20 unassigned weapon points.

Basically, any advice would be welcome. I'm still having trouble with the Dark Hunters and the like... even though I read a lot of people have little or none and I'm really want to improve my game.

Thank you for taking the time to read this.  :lol:

Training is the key, but if you're level 27 you're no newbie player. If you are having trouble with Dark Hunters at this point, consider yourself lucky: If this is your trained optimum, you will never be bored with M&B, because it will always pose a challenge, at least when dealing with Dark Hunters.

When you find yourself bored with the game, try something new - dismount and use a polearm on foot. Unless I misunderstood you, you are mounted all the time, which is only half the game - plus, being on foot is a little harder to do. :grin:

Enjoy!

If you feel like changing the name, simply click on it in the charcater sheet menu. (press c, but I've no doubt you know that by now) and you can enter a new one.

You've got a pretty balanced party as far as I can see. But try using some different troop combination, like Seff already suggested, footsoldier armies are fun, or you can try developing your solo skills. (not as hard as it sounds, fighting solo can be easier in some situation than fighting in a team)

Actually, I meant that S/he should get of the horse.

Marnid is my merchant, he has a trade skill of 5 now.

Since you have zero Trade Skill, you wasted 1 or 2 points (penalty).

Borcha, my tracker has pathfinding and tracking of 6 now.

Another waste since you also have zero on those skill. And, you won't need more than 3 in Tracking. Invest 3 points in Spotting or Surgery is better. I usually go for 5/3/3 (Pathfinding/Tracking/Spotting) effective party points.

Like said above, Trainer Skill is very useful (the only stacking skill). Surgery is good too. You should have a couple points in each skill.

Oh dear... I don't suppose there's a way of relocating skill points...? Yeah I could start a new game, and possibly should for a mod or two, but I'm still exploring the possibilities of vanilla Native.

Secondly, I'm having a hard time getting results searching for anything that explains those skill penalties and such. I thought there was a wiki but I can't find a link. >_<

But, I'll take a guess at this. That second number, the one in parenthesis, gives a penalty to your companions? Or does it represent a minimal skill level you need to have for them to be effective?

EXAMPLE: Pathfinding (3)(2)

their pathfinding is 3 (marnid or borcha's) but since your skill is very low (lets say 0) they will geta  penalty and it will only be as effective as if it were only 2.

Well, there is a manual (an unofficial one) here: http://chapterhouse2.nhvt.net/users/momaw/mbmanual/
Take a look, it is pretty useful!  :wink:

Thank you very much!

I read that start to back, I just have one question:

Rescued Prisoners: These groups are formed when you defeat an enemy group that had prisoners, but decide not to add them to your own party.

I have never, ever, seen this happen.  :shock:

I'm not running any mods either.  :???:

Am I missing something?

It was in an older version (0.751)

It was taken out in this version (0.80:cool:

and hopefully, it will be back in the newer version (0.8xx)

I wonder if they will put the rescued prisoners back in. Because of the ability for a lot of parties to join an already ongoing fight it might just add to much to the map.

New question, thought I didn't need to start a new thread just for it...

Weapon Proficiencies...

The higher they are, the more damage you do with the melee weapons, right?
The archery, crossbow, and throwing enhance your accuracy, and damage? Right?

Reason I ask, is that I can't find a concise answer as to what else they do... Does having a higher crossbow proficiency mean I can reload faster, ect?

As for the melee weapons, is that all it does? Just increases the damage?

As far as anyone can tell. It also appears to affect swing speed.

Archery -> Increases accuracy, increases draw speed. Damage is likely too, although to be honest the increased accuracy and rate of fire means you're generally going from hits on the body to headshots, so it's difficult to judge.

Power draw also affects accuracy. Until your power draw skill exceeds the requisite power draw of the bow by 3 points, you're accuracy is penalised.

Crossbow -> Increases reloading speed. Accuracy is pretty moot (though it presumably increases too).
Throwing -> Accuracy, speed & damage.

I think there's a maximum limit of the damage which can be caused by ranged weapons regardless of skill. No matter how high you're throwing skill is, you're not likely to deal much more than 10 damage with a rock.

Reason I ask, is that I can't find a concise answer as to what else they do... Does having a higher crossbow proficiency mean I can reload faster, ect?
You can find a lot of discussion about this kind of thing here

Thank you. :grin:

I'll peruse that link some. One other question, this may sound silly... Power Draw, does not affect crossbows what so ever, right? I don't know why it would, but I'm curious.

AFAIK you get the damage increase, but it doesn't alter accuracy or speed etc. Not 100% sure on that though.

Doesn't ranged proficiency also affect distance? I could've sworn I've fired further with a crossbow with 300 proficiency, than 22 proficiency.

I have a question as well. Does horse-archery affect the use of light crossbows and hunting crossbows on horse? Under the description it said it only affected throwing and bows, but I could've sworn a accuracy increase with a crossbow on horse upgrading my horse-archery.

[edit] Cool, I'm a squire now!
