For those who have a vassal be their marshal, how do you choose one?
I chose someone initially who had a few family members in my kingdom because I thought he would at least have those guys follow him. Later I saw someone not participate in the campaign because he said he could "do greater things." I checked and the marshal had less renown than this other lord so I thought maybe the lord with the highest renown would be best, but after giving marshal to the lord with the most renown I still had people saying they could do greater things.
I decided to have a vassal as marshal because when they lead a siege the city or castle gets a free garrison. I helped a single lord take a castle and the free garrison was only 20 men, so I am wondering what determines how many and what type of soldiers are put in the garrison. As far as I can tell none of the lords actually gave up soldiers, so the garrisons just comes from nowhere.
What determines the composition of a given lord's army? I look at other kingdoms and see their lords have knights and other top end units, none of my lords seem to get these unless I give them some. I see lords I defeated 2 days before with swadian men at arms in the small army of 20 guys. I don't see how they get those in 2 days. So do lords level up their army from fighting, have training skill or just grow what they want out of their castle/city. If I give a lord a load of horsemen might he end up with knights after a while?
If I build a school then later give away that fief will the school still give me bonus relations each month?
