Looking for advice on making a mod

I'm a new modder, as in tonight I started. So, as new as you can get. I've started making little parts of my mod, naming the kingdoms and getting some ideas gathered about how I want it to be. I'm using a tutorial on Steam, and it's working well enough, but I'm hoping I can get some advice from an experienced modder or really even just someone with a little experience, as I have none.

Pretty much everything. Best programs to use because the link for the one recommended in the tutorial I'm using doesn't work. I'm currently just changing stuff in the .txt files. So yeah, just about anything about modding would be much appreciated.

hint: if you want to use modsys -> check out the tools section and download SublimeAPI and W.R.E.C.K
