Here's a lovely little program that I've been using for a while now. LMMS stands for Linux multimedia studio, but it's recently been released on Windows too. It's definitely worth a try if you've ever fancied making music.
Basically, it's a free alternative to things like FruityLoops and Cubase, which let you create pieces of music with a piano-roll interface. You can either synthesize the sounds from scratch using an easy to use interface, record samples of real instruments and synthesize them playing, or use one the many presets/samples that are included in the software.
Here's a tune I transcribed yesterday, using the harpsichord sample that comes with it: Menuet from French Suite No.3 (BWV 814)
