I assume you mean if it will run using a Windows emulator, like WINE.

The answer is: hardly. If not for anything else, Themida would surely make any attempts to run it on Linux futile.

*oops..* Mods, don't kill me please...

^

Im still trying to figure out why anyone ever buy's linux and mac computer's , is there some benefit i didn't realise? They seem to have very bad support for thing's.

For your information, Linux is an operation system, not a kind of computer. It runs on IBM PC as your MS Windows do.

And you don't buy it either since it's free  (not all distros tho)

Some people use Linux because they can't mod Windows. Some people use mac because it has better programs for what they do, or they grew up with a mac.

Some people also use Linux because it's "more stable" or some crap. I don't know. They seem to be more suitable for people who host servers, though. I don't find it particularly enticing.

Linux is a much more stable and a better resource managing OS, Even HP say "the best operating system currently available", and if you have something running native in linux you will get a huge performance increase and there is much mor available sofware to the public through it.

IE. mandriva linux is free and comes with everything a person/company needs, hence over the last 3 years, since linux has had an easy to use gui, the popularity of it has grown from 2% of the population to 16%. Try it and find out why people use it, and then you will understand that windows only hurts your computer.

also linux is ALOT safer than windows when it comes to being hacked.

144 people working on windows vs. millions of people workin on bettering linux. btw...12 out of the 20 Microsoft servers actually run linux, including the hotmail and msn servers.

ok, now that we've gotten the MS-vs-Linux-vs-Mac ranting out of the way... the original question still waits to be answered...

this looks like a great game world, hopefully *nix support is possible in the future!

Linux cannot natively run Windows binaries nor it has support for DirectX apps. That's why you can't run M&B on Linux.

*BUZZ* wrong answer! but thanks for playing! :p

http://www.transgaming.com/news.php?newsid=25

thanks to products like WineX (called Cedega now), support for DirectX has been around for several years for the Linux Community. As a result many Windows games *do* run natively (more-or-less, which you would know if you understood how Wine and its related technologies work - read this for more info: http://winehq.com/site/myths).

i have an older copy of WineX (pre-Cedega days), and M&B *tries* to start up, but fails at some point on my Kubuntu-Linux desktop (most likely because my onboard graphics card sucks- it can really only run games like Quake 2 and HalfLife).

I imagine that if games like Max Payne 2, GTA Vice City, Battlefield 1942, WarCraft III and the like run well on the latest version of Cedega, then M&B ought to work too.

Only takes one of us to try it out.

I've tried it with the latest vrsion of cedega, it didn't even start to think about running ... i'll get my friend to submit Mount and Blade to transgaming so they can try to get cedega supporting it. I hope it goes through that process well.

I just dont like having to boot into windows just for MAB.

I got rid of windows... i was thinking of trying m&b... I have gotten many apps and games to run in linux even microshaft games...

For you stupid ppl who don't know what the hell your talking about...
Linux is better than windows... There are NO Viruses in Linux... no spyware and no worms... therefore I don't need a virus checker to take up my precious memory and hard drive space...
Among other things.
If you think Linux is crippled or something or only for companies your also wrong. I have REPLACED every program there is in windows with an equal or better program in Linux.. My distro is free and easy once you get to know it but not for everyone... SLACKWARE www.slackware.com...
If you want the facts on Linux the best OS in the world go to www.linux.com
or www.linux.org
or many other linux sites.

As for m&b not making a linux version (which would be easy as sin) is their mistake...
I got there demo exe to run fine in Linux, I just can't play it yet... not to worry I'll keep you posted on what I find.

**BUZZ** wrong answer too! gee, if people would bother to do some research, and actually have some decent experience in these fields, you would not be making such silly statements.

*sigh* fanboys: gotta love 'em!

there are viruses/trojans for *nix-based OSs, it's just that the broader community of developers are quick to fix most of the problems that pop up, *and* it is just more popular to attack Microsoft products at the moment. Rest assured, Linux will get it's share if it grows to dominate the market - though i think that is not likely to happen easily in our lifetime (i'm 38, and have worked with *nix since the early 80's - and it's overall market share is still focused around servers- not that this is a bad thing)..

In fact there are several viruses and trojans floating around for Linux- usually progated to other machines by fanboys like mr. chains here, who don't use a virus checker on their *nix box.

bad chains! baaaad!!!

if it *were* so easy then i suspect that the devs here would have already ported it over, wouldn't you?

instead of whining about how one OS sucks over another, why not direct that energy to helping get this game ported over, or atleast running under WINE/Cedega. this board would save a lot of bandwidth and drive space if this were happening, IMHO.

The good thing (I guess you can call it a good thing...) about linux virii is that due to linux's inherent nature, it can only edit that users files, devastating to the user perhaps (is they didn't backup) but easily fixable for the admin.

The reason mount and blade is not easily portable to linux is that it uses directx for most of it's things, porting it would require a rewrite of almost the whole codebase to something like sdl. Heh, I remember when this was going to be a blender game... It's come a looooong way sing then.

Blender game?

blender game = game that used blender to create the art assets..

there are currently one thing preventing M&B from running with WineX/Cedega and that is themida. neither WineX or Cedega can load windows drivers. Transgaming managed to get steam to work with cedega by implementing their own version of some special crap that steam used (valve helped with that).

currently the only games that doesn't work with Cedega are.
1) really new games that uses DX functions that isn't yet supported by Cedega.
2) Games using starforce or other driver based copyprotection schemes. some driver based copyprotections do work with cedega though but since pretty much in that buisniess is secret the creator of the copyprotection generally has to help out a bit.

to get M&B to work you would have to
remove the copyprotection
or , convince oreans to help include the themida drivers in cedega. (including it in a purely free product such as wine is too much to ask since it would make it too easy to break)
or , create a native linux version of the game that uses another copyprotection system.
