Hi again,

Apologies if this is a daft question, but I couldnt see an answer in the manual (may have missed it).

Is there a level cap in the game?
How useful are books for increasing skills?  I've only met one book seller so far - the prices seemed very high, so would really appreciate a view on the return on that investment.

Many thanks

Each skill caps at level 10, using books does not help you to get higher.

It does help though to increase skills beyond the limit set by the attribute - if you raise your CHA to 27 and Leadership skill to 9 you only need to read a book increasing leadership by 1 and you reach the maximum. Without the book you would need 3 more levels (for CHA 30) to get to Leadership 10.

You should read the books then they bring you the most, at the latest when you have the skill at level 9 or depending on your character when you don't want to increase the base attribute no more.

You can decrease the book price by increasing your trade skill.

perfect, many thanks.

One last question - is there a level cap for your character or heroes?

books are very usefull
at lvl 40 then is it difficult to lvl up
books are usefull but if you trade between cities you can gain many money then its becomming cheap

but there's a level cap unless you purchase it for $30. Mount & Blade: Warband is well worth it.

Well, the game gets too repetive by then. Too little XP to get. Most people get bored and start over again or play a mod.

Going past lv 40 needs grim determination though, no matter if you play native or a mod.

I think the cap is somewhere around 64/63.
Not sure though.

64 if i remember rightly, but takes a loooooooooooooong time, trust me  :lol:

63.
64 just makes you revert back to 1 again.
I checked.

And it doesn't really take long.
All you gotta do is play with the notepad a bit.

It takes a long time if you do it the normal way by earning the experience during the game.
Of course using the export/import function and a text editor is an easy way to check the cap.

Well, this is quite relative. There is a mod in which some AI troops are past level 150. The Rangers Apprentice.
And I personally play a mod until I defeated all factions. (Not as rebel though). And my level is amost 45 then. But when I start an other mod I always import my character from the last one. it's 47 right now. Btw, if you really want to make the xp go a bit faster. so that you might not get bored at 40. You can go to the module.ini file and make the xp go faster. Really simple. And if you don't raise it incredibly high then I don't think it's cheating. It's just lowering the difficulty a bit.

What exactly do you  need to change in there to do it?

I changed the experience gained from tournaments because I wanted to be able to level faster in the earlier levels when my faction is not at war (10-20) but I don't really care for that method as I am constantly running all over the map to get to tournaments and I really hate them in certain cities, I also do not like it because even at the modest increase I put in, it gives large level jumps early on.

If I could raise the exp gain from battles a tad I could just do what I normally do... go wail on sea raiders with my sledgehammer to collect the ransom :grin:

Edit- I see where it is... any suggestions on what to set it to?

You should search for these lines in the module.ini file
player_xp_multiplier  = 2.0;
hero_xp_multiplier    = 2.0;
regulars_xp_multiplier = 3.0;
Just raise the numbers to gain more xp. I'm not sure what the limit is though. But it's quite high and you'll definitely feel a change. Remember to back up the file in case you accidentally do something wrong. It's very easy, but you never know.

Edit: This is for 1.011. But I think it should be something similar for Warband.
