I was incredibly excited to find a Wanderer in the Encyclopedia that had no listed skills and was only 20 years old. I rushed to find her because I figured perhaps she was a fresh adventurer that I could customize completely myself. It was a little odd that she was located in a village, but this is a new game with many possibilities.
I realized that I had been in that village before and that I had killed her lover to bring her back to her father. She settled for a compensation of about 2000 denars and joined up with me. Man, this was exciting, a fresh companion that I could make into whatever I needed.
She is indeed only level 1. But she has 0 in all attributes and all skills and no focus points. That might be okay because maybe she'll level up fast to begin with.
But hey, what is this? Her progress to the next level is -210 skill points out of 5! Oh man.
I think the character and leveling system, as it is, is way too punishing and building a good companion group a frustrating experience. This companion I just recruited is probably a bug although it would be so cool if characters you meet doing quests could join the world like this.
