Let's try a CIVIL discussion of this subject

See if it's possible. no one get's called cockmunch or asshat. But let's discuss magic. What would you be willing to cope with? make a list of things you'd allow/like and a list of things you'd hate.

+ Items with minor magic bonuses. Not 'Assbanger the Dragon Maul' or anything like that. Perhaps a suit of armor that doesn't allow enemies to interrupt you when they deal damage. Maybe a weapon with an enhanced knockdown possibility. Just little things.

+ Minor handicapping or aiding magic. Long cast times, not 100& sure, etc. something that lets all your characters ignore their first wound during a battle, turning an enemy, all that.

+/-Monsters. Only if done well.

- Magical '+3 longsword of fire' weapons. Magical damage enhancements and such are included in every fantasy game.

- Nonhuman races. I don't want to see M&B raped with pointy ears.

- ding-you-are-cured healing or potions.

- Epic storylines of saving the world.

None for me, thanks. I could do with something that's a bit fantasy, but not exactly impossible. For example, war paint that is worn in place of armor. It offers no protection, but on the other hand there's no encumbrance and it could, for example, do what you said, prevent enemies from interrupting you when they deal damage, increase morale when that's implemented, and maybe offer a bonus to attack speed and/or damage. These could all be accounted for by the frenzy you drive yourself into before entering battle. The paint would not have any magical powers per se, but it would make a big difference if you believed it did.

I want this game to be free of magic and fantasy creatures you asshat

Seriously the only effect "magic" items should have should be on morale and possibly a frenzy effect as Okin mentions (eating strange mushrooms or something).
Carrying around the Holy Grail could inspire your men, draw more knights to your cause and heal people by letting them drink from the cup (if people believe in the healing effect, it will probably have some small effect). Might want to exchange Holy Grail with Goblet of Haftir.

Simple solution to a simple problem: leave the main game magicless, but have the developer release a 'magic & fantasy' addon pack. If people don't want magic or fantasy creatures they'll just play the game as is, but if there are others that do want magic and fantasy elements then they download (and install) the addon .

This is a serious question:
What is it about the medieval period and magic? I really dont understand why we can never have one without the other. Any other period in history doesnt seem to suffer from this but this era is plagued with it.

I am not talking about the historical aspects like fear of unknown dragons and turning lead into gold... I mean elves and dwarves and magic ice swords a floating slippers and a unicorn mane that enables the wearer to be invisible. Even reenactors of this period seem to be more "renfest" rather than historical. Why is that I wonder? Is it that D&D just created a sub-culture so powerful that it has affected our taste of this period forever?

IMO I was drawn to this game because it has a historical premise; I hope it remains that way. Their are already so many other fanasty games for those who like them.

It's when the dreamers can come out and play.

I think if people want magic, they'll get it through mods.

Yeah let the asshats  mod it in if they want it.
I do want magic but only in the LOTR & ASOIAF mods and other such mods not vanilla M&B.

I'll pass, i wouldnt mind the story line if thats what everyone wants... but those potions and stuff just dont do it.....bunch of stupid asshats probly play some game, go out, slash eachother, then drink some chocolate milk expectin to heal.......

... floating slippers ...

Where did that come from? I've never heard of floating slippers...

But anyway, magic would make people look at this game as some cheap copy of Morrowind with horses imho.

You could have some mysterious witch selling healing potions - which don't do anything. Same goes for "magic" swords, rings and other gadgets.

On the other hand, some weapon properties could mimic magic effects. For example, a heavier weapon would likely have an increased knockdown chance at the expense of slower speed, while a light weapon would move quicker while doing less damage. or something.

ASSHAT:razz: Teehee!

I think magic would be a mistake, exept if it involves zombies and necromancy (like some files suggest). I mean comon'... zombies are cool to fight against.

They could add fantasy stuff that would involve some sort of magic and I would still be happy (like maybe different races and ancient weapons). Just make it subtle.
Is it that LOTR/THE HOBBIT just created a sub-culture so powerful that it has affected our taste of this period forever?
Fixed.
