Let's talk about legislation

Come to Finland! Come see our proud new copyright laws! I'll give you an example:

Here's Persenaama. He is an ordinary Finnish taxpayer, and he just bought an MP3-player. He buys a CD from the local store, then goes home hoping to turn it into MP3s (he'll also use the original CD in his stereo) so he can add them to his shiny new player. But oh noes, he becomes a criminal the minute he does it! Well ****, what would be the legal course of action?

1: He could both buy the CD from the store and the MP3s from an online store, meaning he would have to pay twice for the same product. Or...
2: He could download the MP3s from some site or a peer to peer network (this is only discouraged/frowned upon legislationwise here) and burn them as an audio CD, paying nothing to the actual artists!

Other funny bits about the new law:
1:"weak" copyprotection can be cracked legally, whereas "strong can't. The difference between strong and weak copyprotection hasn't been defined anywhere.
2:If you are caught from breaking the new copyright law, you are to pay an announcement in the paper that says you broke the law. This hasn't been applied to any other crime. Somehow pirates are worse than pedophiles and rapists, so they should inform the community about their illegal ways.

The other Finns here may say if I've got any errors in this post, and if the mods feel like this isn't a topic that should be open for discussion, they may lock/delete this thread. I just had to write this.

I am breaking the law, breaking the law.
EDIT: Yeah. That law sucks monkeyballs like a vacuumcleaner on duracell. I live in the wilderness and only the laws of the wilderness are valid here, in the murky forests of Varjakka.
EDIT2: You can copy a CD if it doesn't have a copy protection. But I am sure they add some ****ty protection to all of the records (some readme that tells not to copy the CD).

I don't see any reason to lock or delete this. I agree with you. The law (in almost any country you can name) is having a hard time adapting to new technology. No easy end in sight IMO, What you'll see (and are seeing) is large companies , who can afford to, pushing for law that suits them best. Sometimes this causes pretty illogical results. Barring a grass-roots effort this won't change.

You forgot one, can't you buy the MP3 and burn it into a CD?

By the way, Pirates ARE worse than a rapist or a pedophile considering the amount of people their actions can reach.

A pedophile or a rapist can rape one, two, three, 10, 20, how many people?

A pirate who doesn't pay tax and doesn't pay a store/record company/artist/CD factory/Transport/etc. is affecting alot of people, I'm not saying it's worse than raping and killing someone, just that a pirate can affect a wider range of people, even if less severely than a killer.

So, no, a Pirate should not be sentenced like a pedophile, but he is naive if he think he doesn't affect anybody, and even more if he thinks he's the smart one.

Speaking of smart people, there's nothing worse than a bad legislation is it, on these cases there's always good advice:

"When in doubt, use common sense".

Warn me, torture me, ban me, but if you bought a CD and if you bought an MP3 player and if you bought a CD-ROM drive you might aswell rip those tracks, turn them into MP3, put them in your MP3 player and be happy with it, as long as you are not re-distributing the song (sharing the file with all your friends, peer-to-peer, etc) you are the good guy untill proper laws or a better "media" system can be developed.

But how would anyone find out? I assume police cannot search your computer unless there is a court decision allowing them to do so - highly unlikely i that case.
Don't ask - don't tell. That's what gays do in US navy.
That way, a law cannot be enforced. A non-enforcible stupid law - a law stupid to the second power

WTF is the perception of piracy in Finland?! To me, that looks like a definition of piracy

Vote out whoever made those laws during the next election.

No you are wrong, if a pedophile abuses 1 child, he also affected every person that will ever come in contact with that person during his/her life. these victims tend to become emotionqaly screwed manic depresses, Borderline personality disorder etc.. and become verry expert at manipulating people and making life a living hell for annyone in there surounding.

so they indirectly affect manny people. becaus just check how manny people have become part or will become part of your direct suroundings. now imagine you messing up their lives (destroying their self esteem, turning them against each other etc...) Thats a lot of people affected

and don't underestimate the destructive power of a manic depressed persor person with borderline, I have had some come into my life, and more and more I am getting convined these people shouldn't be walking the streets as they are even more destructive to a person then anny drug can be.

As for pedophiles, I think there is no need to imprison them.

Just castrate them upon finding guilty and let them bleed to death in agony in the courtroom

For those of you wondering, the person who shat out this law is the mister of culture Tanja Karpela, whos only merit was that she is the ex-miss Finland. Swear to God. She is so unqualified she could learn a thing or two from Bush.

I did it but what happens after that? I can only speak English

6254 Kyle Velez Bakersfield

As far as I can tell I'm the only American on that section of the list.

Well what now happens is that SuPo will come to your door and arrest you for piracy and you will be sent to Siberia for the rest of your life.

Hmm but what when you sign up some of your "friends" there?! *evil laugh and gets his list ready*

Siberia will be overfilled very soon...

Actually, no. People don't live too long in labour camps - especially if they're naked.

Damn! Thats bad, because i already purchased postcards i wanted to send them... but they would probably already be death, when the postcards would arrive in siberia.

Oh and btw Dynamite_cow you seem to know much about the camps, are you by any chance connected to them in any way?

I defeated an officer...
