RELEASE DATE:
OPEN SOURCE RELEASE SHORTLY AFTER NEXT VERSION OF M&B

Preamble (you can skip): Well, I thought I would abandon LOM because Bitter Earth is such a huge project I'd never get both done. However, while playing TLD I got inspired to make a not so mini mini mod that incorporates the features about it that I like. More for personal use than anything else. That's what I have been playing for a while. I thought of releasing that as a mini mod but that would be too much of a ripoff I think. Also, it's gone from a one off weekend project to something I think is worth release in its own right. I was going to release it unannounced, but El Duke has decided to be nice enough to pitch in with some awesome art assets and urged me to publish a thread in hope of getting more collaborators. Note that I have abandoned the old LOM code base. It was too ambitious and would take too much time to do that and BE. This one is all new. It's a much simpler mod, but I like it quite a bit.

Setting: The first age of Tolkien's world, the time of The Silmarillion. Also known as the time before elves became wusses.

Completed Features:
1. New war system. There are three important factors here: Intelligence level, Supply Level, and Morale. You can affect each by killing the right types of units, and each has an effect on combat. The better the supply level, the better the fewer casualties a unit takes in battle. The party with the highest intelligence level also  has a chance to ambush the other party. This is very bad for them, and even a scout party can do signifigant damage. Morale affects how well units fight. Quality of troops matters much more than the troop numbers, and fights can be quite lethal between AI parties. For the player the fights work much the same, but if you don't keep your faction in good shape it will get torn apart. Every time you destroy a party you will be rewarded. Every time you learn the location of a new enemy party, you increase your faction's intelligence level and get a small reward.

2. Capture and kill missions are active at all times. Capture a few officers, you'll always get a reward. Same applies if you scout the location of a new unit or destroy a unit.

3. All native dialog removed or rewritten.

4. Factions:
  Angbad (Morgoth)
  Sauron

  High Elves
  Grey Elves
  Menegroth

  More will be added later.

5. Game rebalance. Thanks to some new features in the next version, I will be able to make a much better game balance than before.

6. Wound system. Companions can become wounded and will be unable to fight for a few days.

7. Girdle of Melian. Units that are not of doriath are unable to enter its woods.

8. Companions gain exp and proficiency points faster. All companions are given a share of experience based on the size of the battle fought, and extra proficiency points for each successful battle, as well.

I have other features done as well, but I do not remember them all as I have put this aside for a month or so to work on Bitter Earth.

All the features listed above are done except the rebalance, though I need to playtest and redo the units and party templates, as well. Which will hopefully be done soon....

Planned features:
Make a suggestion for something and it might show up here. I will also add in some of my own ideas over time.

Anyhow, I know you muppets don't read any of this crap so here's the artwork

Good stuff you got there. The mod sounds fun, and the battle system sounds great. I really like the way the orcs look, though the elves look a bit normal.

This will be cool I think. It's a *much* simpler and easier project than BE and it's good to have a break on the doomsday and enter high-fantasy for the first time . New experiences !

Looking at the elves now I kind of dislike them. They look really retarded in many ways. I tried changing the head shape to make them look taller and superior but they kind of ended up looking like Pete Townshend. Oh well, I will think of another way later  :???:. Right now I want to make werewolves

This also really won't affect BE development in any way. TSN pretty much finished the code for the first version and I will work on it really slowly, chugging out models as I'm taking a break from Radiocative westerness and as inspiration comes.

Right now the purpose is to get orcs, goblins and werewolf troops ready for the first release. Help on weapons, helmets and other small bit for the orcs and goblins is very welcome!

A few things that could help with the elves:

-Give them a very pale, possibly bluish skin tone. It'll make them look a bit less like pointy eared humans without making them ugly.
-More dramatically swept and graceful eyebrows.
-More pronounced cheekbones.
-Pointier/aquiline nose.
-Drop the mouth to nose distance, it seems to be making them look a bit slack jawed.

I'm not sure how well these match Tolkiens descriptions - I haven't read the Silmarillion and didn't really pore over the descriptions in LOTR.

Yeah, I was thinking on something like that myself.

I"m not much into tolkien lore, but if I ain't mistaken that only real description on elves is that they are taller and more fair than men, with some kind of "glow" around them. I think I read somwhere that even the pointy ears are disputable.

LOL @ Pete Townshend. Well, I like the elves ok, but I'm sure whatever you do will be awesome.

For some reason the helmets pic is not showing up, and those are pretty awesome. Maybe image shack is messed up.

I've put a few hours into the map, btw. I am becoming quite good at map making I think. It is a hell of a job, though. I will post some screens at some point.

Hi all,

wonderful news this!

LOM was one mod I REALLY, REALLY looked forward to...

Good luck to the devs!

Regards, Oldtimer

Wow a mod about the war of the Silmarils! Great!

Maybe you must do 2 types of face for the elves. The Calaquendi (High Elves), the ones who come from Valinor, their faces must be more shiny (white and light yellow) because they grow up under le light of the Trees of Valinor. And the Moriquendi (Grey Elves), like the pope said must be more pale because they stay on the middle earth and dont see the light of Valinor.

Good luck with this mod.

Hey Bryce you are my hero. I've been waiting for you to resurrect LoM! I will try to help you sometime in the future for this mod. I love the helmets.

This is a good idea, I think. The problem is that although making a pale skin is easy, I have no idea how to make a face look "shiny"(Making it white will make it pale, and making it yellow...). Perhaps a shader? Shiny faces may not be a god idea at the end.

Wait, tell me about these werewolves.

From what TSN told me there are no specifics in the book regarding their appearance. I plan to make meshes to be rigged to the human skelleton (Walk on two feet, a bit hunched...your classical werewolf) and it would use the unarmed atack animation with claws.

There are also vampires (bat like freaks with spiked wings) ,great wolves from wich the "wargs" originated, Balrogs and Dragons. Yup, the first age is really far out in comparison to the 2d and 3rd one

Humm...improved th elf head a bit, but still not quite there yet. It still looks a bit goofy, though now I think the problem might be the texture (wich is a quick edit/test of one of the vanilla face textures). Made the skin pale bluish, fixed the chin/jaws, increased the size of the ears, made the nose more aquiline...

Suggestions? I put a comparison with a vanilla human head mesh/texture at the bottom of the screen. Also finished a vampire head mesh/texture and the werewolf head mesh (needs a bit of work still)

I know it might cause problems to the lip scaling, but PLEASE, shut their mouths! especially the elf. That's a thing I HATE about MaB, how everyone just stares blank with their mouths open. Also I would extend the cheek bones with the elf..

Yeah, I will zip the damm elf mouth ( He is from the superior race after all, right?  ). And I indeed forgot about the cheek bones...fixing it now.

Don't shut the wolves' mouths though. The wargs in TLD look like black lab puppies due to this. You don't see those up close, either, and probably not the vampires etc.

another elf thing. The green eyes are just...grass green...I mean..freakish even
