Laurian After-Action Report

I thought I'd prematurely write an after-action report for a E&RC game I'm currently playing.

Here is the map, as it stands:

As you might have guessed, I'm with the Laurians. On day 888 we've defeated the Ormeli Empire and the Holy Swadian Empire, and we're currently fighting the Vaegirs. My fiefs include Mourne, Tulbuk Castle, Tulbuk, and Tash Kulun. We started out at war with the Imperial State and the Ormeli Empire. We failed to gain ground against the Imperials however and before long declared peace having taken Getzenberg Castle and having lost Hrus Castle.

We then focused our attention solely on the Ormeli, and before long we were joined by the Swadians, the Lion Throne, and even the Imperials. While this was happening, the Imperials were losing a war to the Vaegirs and the Lion Throne. Within a few months they lost Mourne to the Vaegirs. They also lost Hrus castle.

We took Ozalp and the surrounding castles very quickly. Shortly thereafter, we somehow had a week-long war with the Holy Swadians (it seriously only lasted a week) in the midst of the war with the Ormeli. During this time, we managed to take Tevarin Castle, Ryibilet Castle, and Malayurg Castle from the Swadians. One of the more decisive conflicts I've seen.

After the week-long war I was given Tash Kulun, my first fief.

The Lion Throne and the Imperials did little to help against the Ormeli, but the Swadians were a powerful ally. Before the week-long war they liberated Darende, and after it they liberated Bergama. I was given Tulbuk Castle and Tulbuk after we liberated it.  It took us forever, but we finally managed to take Rumelia and the Ormeli were defeated.

I amassed troops in Tulbuk castle and waited for the next war. I will note at this point that I've found The Redeemer, so battles are pretty easy. Once I found all three of the unique guns, I usually found myself using 2 at once. Either redeemer/cannon or redeemer/elephant gun works well. The elephant gun is a must have for offensive sieges.

Anyway, it wasn't long before the Vaegirs declared war on Swadia, and the Laurians thought what the hell and joined in the fight against Swadia. At this point the Lions and the Vaegirs were still having trouble eliminating the Imperials, and at some point Mourne got taken by the Imperials and re-taken by the Vaegirs. The Swadians proved to be wussies, except for their lords. We quickly began taking their remaining castles and we had Ulm captured in the first few months.

Later, The Lion Throne decides they want a slice of central calradia so they declare war on Swadia, and then the Imperials declare war on Swadia. Poor Swadia!

And then, the timing couldn't have been better, I became the marshall. Despite owning 5 cities, the Swadians were on their last knees, with many of their lords in captivity. During my term as marshall, I took Marienburg, Zollern, and Bergama from the Swadians. The Lion Throne managed to grab Vienna, and we only took Darende a few months later, defeating the Swadians.

At this point I had more than a dozen Swadian lords sitting in my dungeon. Every once in a while one would escape and join another faction. One particularly amusing instance was when Ahmet Bey, an Ormeli lord I had locked up in my dungeon very early in the game, escaped, joined the Laurians, and was awarded a castle within days. I don't think I'm allowed in Ahmet's castle.

So at this point, the Vaegirs own all of their original cities + Mourne. The Lions own all of their original cities + Vienna + a bunch of Imperial castles. In addition, the Vaegirs have a few extra castles in the old Swadian territory (Vyincourd, Haringoth, Senuzgda). As the Laurians own 10 cities, the game feels pretty much over. But it ain't over til it's over.

It isn't long before we're at war with the Vaegirs for the first time. We still haven't had a war with the Lion Throne. A comment on the gameplay difficulty- the Vaegirs seem much harder than the Swadians. Lots of gunpowder, and berserker infantry instead of the usual wall of pikes. I'm having casualties nearly every battle.

However, not even the Vaegirs could hold out against the siege of Mourne, with its garrison of 200. As soon as I was marshall again I beseiged the city with a massive army and captured it. And of course, it was awarded to me. Shortly thereafter, the Lion Throne declared war on The Vaegirs, and now we're just splitting up the territory.

So that's where I'm at! I'm level 33, I have a combined garrison (mourne and tulbuk) of about 500 men, an army size of 122, fully built up fiefs (except for Mourne), and lots of prisoners as an investment in the game's future. My question is, what is the game's future? I was thinking maybe I'd renounce my oath on the next city I take. Won't that mean I'll keep Mourne, its 4 fiefs, and the city that I take and its corresponding fiefs? Seems like I could start a pretty sizable kingdom that way. And I was pretty pissed that I didn't get a single one of Mourne's 4 fiefs, even though they all hate me.

I've played lots of M&B, but I've never started my own faction or helped a claimant. Which should I do? Helping a claimant doesn't seem like it'd be valuable at this point.

The other problem is that Mourne and Tulbuk are on opposite sides of the continent!

Anyway, hope you enjoyed my experience playing the E&RC mod. It's definitely one of the better M&B mods I've played, and without a doubt the best gunpowder mod out there.

Nicely done. It appears that the Lion Throne is the second most powerful faction on the map... as it should be. Beware the Propugnators!

Which one is the most powerful?

In this AAR it's probably the Laurians. Tiberius is commenting like that on the Lion Throne probably 'cause it has a large empire and is rather powerful.

I have a question that's worth bumping this thread for.

Since I posted this, I've played til about Day 1000. I've broken off from the Laurians. Viva revolucion!

I now own Mourne and it's corresponding fiefs, Lorraine and its corresponding fiefs (I captured it with the Laurians before I broke free), and Tulbuk Castle. I'm at war with the Imperial State, which occupies only L'rennouile (sp?) and the Vaegirs, which occupies its four original cities and no castles. I'm wishing I had taken the Laurians into war with the Lion Throne so I'd have another ally against the mighty Laurian Empire. Of course, then I'd be at war with the Lion Throne.

I've gone toe-to-toe with a few of their lords for the first time and damn they're tough. I took their units for granted.

But i haven't touched the game in a while because it just seems too damn hard! How am I supposed to beat lords with 200+ men when I can only have 125 and I don't have any supporting lords? Is there any way to get supporting lords? I mentioned earlier that I have numerous Swadian lords sitting in my Tulbuk dungeon but I don't think they'd want to work for me...

So after failing to beat my former BFF Lord Ferdinand I put the game down for a while. This cannot be the end... Am I missing something?

I could support a claimant, but it was my intention when i broke off to rule my own faction. I've never supported a claimant before. Is that the only way to get lords to join your faction? I'm sure I could take a sizable chunk of the Laurian lords with me that way, but the empire wouldn't be mine

It is the only way to get other lords to follow you, yes. However, most of the fiefs you conquer will remain yours, and so, if you wish, you can just empty them of garrisons in preparation for your final rebellion.

...now that i hadn't thought of. i'm not sure if i'll keep the feifs attached to Mourne and Lorraine (don't those feifs usually get re-distributed?) but i guess i will still control a sizable chunk of the empire.

I assume I should support the Laurian claimant, as they have the largest empire and their lords are all gay for me.

If I can, it would be even more awesome if I could take L'renouille before the rebellion. The Imperials are *****es at defending sieges though.

I will update this thread when I make progress. So much for 'after-action' report.

It's hard for me to believe that I've played M&B for a year now without ever supporting a claimant. I had no idea that the mechanics for doing so were so well-incorporated.

I also don't know if any of the claimant mechanics were refined/changed for this mod in particular. Either way I was very impressed.

The reason I've never supported a claimant is that I always thought the game 'ended' whenever you formed your own kingdom with you as the sole ruler- and then I always got frustrated when it was just too damn hard! Supporting a claimant seems to give you the same amount of power, with the additional perk of being able to have lords.

Anyway, I'm officially converted. Long live Juan Batista Loeher.

Just curious- is there any way to change the color of my faction to distinguish it from the Laurians? maybe a darker red?

For the most part, during the revolution, I went with the last dialog option dealing with personal gain. I used dialog options 1 and 2 for certain lords.

This was actually my second attempt at the revolution. I was unaware of some of the mechanics on my first attempt, so I gave myself another shot. However, in order to avoid being a lame cheater, I didn't save my game with the first result on the offchance that I did worse the second time around...

And wouldn't you know it.

The first time I managed to get Lords Augusto (Bergama and Curin Castle), Garcia (Rumelia), Sancho (Sungetche Castle), and Pedro (Jelbegi Castle). On the second attempt the only lords that I didn't also get the first time were Vargas (Getzenberg Castle), Amadeo (Rindyar Castle), and Cortez (no feifs). I might still get Ogan Bey and Lord Joseph on my side, but neither would bring any feifs. So I did much better the first time when I didn't even know there were 'consistency checks'.

But whatever, it'll be challenging this way. In the first attempt I had 7 cities and they had 5, now I have 5 and they have 7.

Cortez joined the cause right after we stormed his castle (Alburq). 'You have something that belongs to me,' he says. Brave words, Cortez.

We are now at peace with the Vaegirs. So now the diplomatic situation is that everyone is at war with everyone except that only the Laurians and Imperials are at war with us. The Vaegirs and the Lion Throne are destroying one another and I can't interact with their battles. What a waste. EDIT: Vaegirs are no longer at war with Imperials. Damn them!

I did get to keep all my feifs- although I almost wish I could re-distribute them since all of them hate me. Particularly the ones around Mourne.

So that's the revolution so far. I'll update again when queen ***** Imelda sits in my dungeon. As my lords would say, 'He is simply not fit to rule his empire!'

It's like there's a big inside joke about the queen's gender

EDIT: Also, I'm curious: when exactly does the 'revolution' phase end and what happens when it does? Do the lords that we're at war with now (the Laurians) join my side? or are they distributed like any other factions' lords?

I assume Juan Batista eventually breaks off from my party? I'd like him to be able to take care of his feifs.

Funny, I just captured that ***** into my prison and destroy the laurian faction today and put in the new claimant
