Late game boredom

first off,  I am fairly sure there will be another thread in the depths of this forum with the same topic that has been dead for months, but if I necro'd it, I would just get flamed for doing so...

Early in the game things are tough and your scrabbling to get a few denars- its a challenge, its fun
mid game you usualy have an alegance, quite a lot of troops and some fairly awsome items-  your just starting to kick ass, its fun.
but late game, you have a horde of top-teir troops and the best items in the game, several castles and meybe even a city- and suddenly the game isnt a challenge anymore, you just ride up to a castle spend a couple of mins hacking up the locals and its yours! I allways end up giving up the game at this point out of boredom! I usualy become a masterless warlord, thinking everyone will be out to get me- thinking I will be in an uphill struggle, bringing back the challenge of the early game- but it doesnt.

what to do?  I know there are a few mods out there that try to spice up the late game, like the black knight invasion-  but thats just feels like 'BAM your dead, go start again' anyone know a mod that is a tough challenge in the later stages of the game?

Actually, the Dark Night invasion in Native Expansion feels more like the rise of a really competitive opponent (at a date YOU set up).
If you're weak and stupid, you're dead, indeed. But if you're smart and prepared, you can beat them in the end.
Just pray that they don't siege your possessions first.

Sword of Damocles also has an 'Invasion' event.

Ive gone through 2 dark night invasions and both times they seiged my stuff first with their entire army,  I guess i was just unlucky ):  first time i didnt realy know what to expect, so granted its fair enough that I lost,  but the second time a stocked up on countless veigeir archers (whatever top teir is, i forget) and nord huskals,  they still broke through and slaughtered me ):  as I said, i was probably just unlucky.

Im playing SoD now, still in the early stages of the game and im impressed so far, Im gonna stick with it.

That's what I wanted to advise.
I've only played the undead invasion variant though (looked easier).

it is however a problem - you get better and better and better....  The enemies don't.  The highest tier AI troops (in native) are about 30, but have the stats you, as player, would have at level 18 or 20.

I guess the root of the problem is that the game was never intended to be linear.  In linear games, you can introduce bigger and harder challenges as time goes on, but in M&B, you can only do this to a certain extent....

I have a problem with linear games, after all where were these high level enemies during all that time I slapped their younger brothers?
The problem is not that elites are that bad, the problem is that the lords don't have many of them. Perhaps this could be improved by giving them the Trainer skill.

I try to minimize my effect on the game (my ability to fight) by playing a leader - I stay back, order my troops around and fight only when directly threatened.

See I have the opposite problem in that I don't have enough time to play everything I want to

SoD is great, kingdom management, different recruiting shcemes, weapons etc, love this mod, working on finishing this game before the next version

Berserk(of course), is an interesting story based mod that seems to play quite a bit different to me, super over powered characters(both yours and enemies ex. some characters have a speed rating of like 255, aoe), lot's of scripted battles, new map, lots of mini modsetc.

I really want to try Lords and Realms, Native expansion, Prophecy of Pendor, tales of taleria, but have no time.

In fact I just started using the Siege ladder fix and I love it, makes sieging a different experience.
