Laptop's dying.

It gets past BIOS, but when it gets to the loading bar associated with Vista, the screen goes blank and does nothing for ages, before I shut it down in rage. System Restore does nothing, and ideas?

I have had the same problem few times, usually waiting and after awhile restarting has done the trick.

Isnt it restarting? What antivirus software you use? I guess its harddrive failing...
It's not restarting, and I have no antivirus software.
You should definetaly get one and start a scan!
EDIT: As fast as you can get NOD 32 trial version

You... don't have any antivirus software? I surprised this hasn't happen years ago.
Anyhow, we could use some more information instead of guessing what's wrong.

How could he tried System Restore then?

It gets to the Vista loading screen. System restore can be done before that, although it's been some time since I've done it.

Really? Didnt know that... The only thing I can think of now is safe mod and formating disks

Check for errors on the HDD with disk check.

*Edit* I just had a brain wave, One time my windows 7 ****ed over so i had to do the thing im about to tell you about however im just assuming you can do it in vista.

Things you will need.
-Disk
-Computer *note* it can be any windows vista computer not just yours.
-Able to get into controll panel.

What to do.
Go into controll panel and select System and security once in there select backup and restore. After your in there on the left collum you should see create a system repair disk. Follow the instructions that it gives you then restart the computer and put the disk you just made and tell it to repair problems that may prevent start up.

Thats the best idea i could give you, Good Luck.

 Yeah, I don't have any anti-virus stuff because Norton pissed me off so much, and I never got around to looking into Avast, etc. I'm not sure it's a virus, otherwise surely the System Restore should have worked?

I'm going to try checkdisc etc, and let you all know in the morning. Thanks for most of the replies.

Hold down shift when the Bios completes and before the Vista loading screen starts up. Should get you into safe mode so you can see what the **** is going on with it.  Check the logs (eventviewer), IIRC Vista already has a custom "boot" log defined so you should see any errors reported there.

If it was a disk error causing it I doubt you'd get the Windows loading screen in the first place.
