Laptop Overheating

At least I think it's overheating however I bought one of those fan things you put your laptop on and it helped nothing. It seems to be overheating because I can surf the web for hours but if I play something like New Vegas or even Minecraft it runs perfectly fine but about 6-10 minutes in just clicks off without warning.

Does your laptop have any obscure key to activate a second fan that's near the processor? My dad's laptop was always overheating when he gamed, and I found a button with that nasty Fn bull**** that turned on a cooler. No problems from there unless he forgot to turn it on.

Yeah, the green and gold chip. Always has a fan just for itself, which the laptop my dad owned didn't use unless you made it use it.
