Lances in WB (and most mods)....worth it?

This has been bothering me a bit. In original MnB, couched lance was stupidly powerful. In WB, it was nerfed by delay, and limiting the ability to few weapons.

But now I just don't see a benefit in using it at all. I can kill most enemies in vanilla and most mods I played (barring Brytenwalda, where long spear is actually important, but without any couched lance damage, and some inhuman enemies in PoP) with a simple ride-by with a sword or other long slashing weapon more versatile than lance with decent character (300-ish WP, PS 6+).

So in the end, I feel like it's not worth the weapon slot, since I have to choose between lance, bow/crossbow and shield. Lance just seems least useful.

So what do you think about lances, are they really useless for player?

I think the jousting lance, that deals blunt damage, is good to start with, specially in Swadia, because you can get a lot of money with prisoners.

I have never been a fan of lances in warband. I didn't play vanilla M&B so I don't know what it's like there, but in warband, it just feels clunky to use. I can dish out much more kills with a 1-handed sword or a morning star. I only really use them if I am forcing the role of a knight or something like that or if I just want to deal as much damage as possible to a lord (particularly Jarl Olaf because he looks goofy ).

Destroying Ragnar's face with a lance is also very funny

I prefer a crossbow bolt for that...currently playing Floris, and my masterwork Arbalest can reliably hit a head at 100 meters. Lords usually don't see it coming.

You can't block a couched lance, they're useful for melee-sniping heavier units.

You can still chamber block it....at tournaments, it drove me nuts, trying to lance a dismounted lancer....

Long awlpikes are my favorite, they are speedy, very strong and have a good reach. Unfortunately you can't couch with it.

For multiplayer I pick up lances if I can find them as Inf, since they dont show up on your character you can quickly whip them out and surprise charging cavalry with them.

Lances are very usefull! If it isn't for the quik dismount or kill on tincan enemys by a couch, it's for their range and safe distance combat.
My main weapon is my lance and I do a lot of dammage with it, I rely on it as infantry rely on their sword and archers on their bow/Arrow.
I'd say, whenever you are mounted and you can get a lance, just do it! Unless you can pick up long awlpikes who have more range/dammage/speed.

If you get the timing right lances are more valuable than swords because you don't need to rely on the silly horse-bump-slice thing. Even at lower levels you can oneshot most earlygame soldiers due to the huge speed bonus and piercing damage. Plus the extra reach is pretty important in SP.

Of course they have very little use outside of mounted field combat so it depends a lot on playstyle.

Bumpstabs with lances are also very effective, and lances can be used anywhere. If dismounted, it can be used as 2h without should and works like a pike would.

Any time I use a lance, I'm a cavalry player, so I use lance, shield, scimitar, and throwing weapons. Usually works pretty well, especially if your army is 100% cav and you're zipping around the overworld like a golden horde.

I'd usually couch whenever I have space (the first charge), then pull out the scimitar to kill enemy horses.

They are slow as hell.

you are kidding right lances are the most powerful weapon on horses
I didnt use it because it is too powerful
I use war cleaver on horses just because it looks cool
using two handed you can not crush through blocks
those that can have limited range
but if you use jousting it is INSTANT KILL
and your lance is very good if you use a suitable length
you can kill a lot of people even without jousting
the only problem is if the person is using a two handed it is very easy to block it with a down block
but again you can just joust them
also you could choose another target that is not aware of your attack
if you use lances like a long spear it will fck sht up
lances could get  a lot more kills than two handed
the speed ratings are very good

I like lances. Both for the knightly image when playing the Swadians and also because it can give can you the reach to take down hard-hitting enemies without exposing yourself or getting so close that your horse may stop right in the middle of the foe. Those damn Vaegirs with their massive axe-ish weapons (I forgot the name) is really painful when you're facing the business end of them. Better then to use a lance to keep some distance to them and stab them in the face with that lance.
