Kodan Ironsword - Release or Take Prisoner?

So, yes.  I'm new to this.  and at least the search function didn't find any useful info on him.  I do recall Kodan is a special spawn of some sort.  But is there any point to taking him prisoner?  Can I talk to him for a ransom or to recruit him?  Or am I better to let him go and just get honor since that's what I'm going for.

then talk to him ...

release him ...and take a qualis gem....

almost all named specialty spawns can be ransomed for a qualis gem, arguably the most valuable item in the game.
