I wondered how the ''knockdown'' system worked, is it something you can master, or is it a % chance with big weapons?

I think its the better your weapon proffiency the bigger change of knocking your enemy down with a 2h weapon

Blunt weapons also have a greatly increased chance of knockdown. With a military hammer you'll be knocking them all over the place.

Does it matter much? Stunlock on them from attacking works anyhow.

I occasionally miss because I initiate another slashing attack only for it to miss because the target is lying on the ground.

Often, to exploit the knockdown, you will be swarmed by other infantry.

Knockdown comes in very handy at times. Sometimes one of the infantry tends to be a little quicker than the rest. Knock him down, hit him till he stops moving and get ready for the rest.

Depends, that requires quite high athletics skill to tease away individuals. When I have such high athletics skill, I simply charge in, slash, and back away before they can retaliate.
