It's not at all like AoE, it's more like real time Total War actually.
It's really neat and quaint but has some issues that bug me. Also, there is no multiplayer campaign. On the plus side, you can play as any of a couple hundred nations.

Its pretty much like the Total war series.
There is a map of Europe where you reinforce your cities and stuff and when an army meet an enemy army it goes into battle mode much like total war.
The only difference from Total war is that the map overview mode is real time instead of turn based like total war.
