There was a thread on this before, but it sort of died prematurely.
Anyway, Knights of Honor. Great game. Released in 2004, it is essentially a mix between the Total War series and EU - with about the same learning curve as the 2 games/2.
Bottom Line? Great game. It plays in real-time, and though you can control individual battles, its easier and generally more fun to let the computer handle it.
You choose 1 out of 100 kingdoms in 3 different Medieval eras (Early, High, Late). However, new kingdoms constantly spring up with the conquest of regions (Munster turning into Ireland, for example) or forming Scotland from the Highlands.
As well, the game relies upon you using 9 knights in different roles (generals, merchants, clerics...etc) as well as actual family members who age and die. Which can be an issue, as if your king dies without an heir, your kingdom is split asunder. Bordering provinces in your kingdom can split off, forming potential empires, such as the Kingdom of Dublin, or Cornwall...etc.
Overall, the game is amazingly fun. It gives a ton of options for how to manage your kingdom, hundreds of different kingdoms to play as, and everything associated with Medieval Europle: Crusades, Jihads, Clerics being appointed to Popes...etc.
I only found this game about a year ago. Sort of sad, as it is such an amazing yet unheard of game. Remember though, don't go into it looking for a Medieval 2 Total War clone. It is a genre unto itself.
