Kataphract Build

Well Kataphracts historically were heavy armored cavalry used by Sarmatians, Dacians, Scythians, Persians and a few other cultures. They used segmented armor from crown to hoof and all weilded a lance. As a side arm they generally had a sword or mace. From my study most also carried a bow. The epitome of Kataphracts to me are the ones Romans used during the "Byzantine" era since the Romans had experience with both the best of the west and east. A common tactic against the less armored nomads in the east was for the Romans to line up their kataphracts and exchange arrow volleys with the enemy while they could shrug off most incoming shots. They were the end all be all of cavalry highly trained and basically deciding the outcome of the battle much the same way Companion cavalry did during Alexander's conquests.

So i'm just sharing my M&B version of the Kataphract and hopefully I can get some ideas as well.

Armor wise I use Lammelar. The silver metal segmented look is perfect as well as it being lighter weight than plate. As a helmet I used the spiked helmet. I wish there was something similar in that manner with mail covering the face. I use leather gloves and splinted greaves for the rest.

As a horse i'm having a bit of trouble here. Since i'm using a lance and couching it you need to use a warhorse or a charger. I've found that the charger looks better for a kataphract look but the war horse can pretty much do the same thing for charging but it is faster.

Weapon wise I use a balanced heavy lance. I generally like balanced weapons for their speed. I use a strong bow because it's fast enough at shooting but is stronger than a khergit bow. I have a large bag of khergit arrows. As a melee weapon I use a spiked mace or scimitar. My issue is that I wish we could use 5 slots for weapons so I could carry a shield which would be Kite or Steel. Sometimes i'll drop the melee weapon and use a shield with a lance along with bow and arrow.

My tactic would be to advance over charging terrain and advance slowly as I let off arrows into grouping. Then as I pick up speed, I lower the lance and charge into the enemy. Continue on as I shoot the bow behind me, get myself enough distance as I keep shooting and do it all over again.

Kataphracts and the like are pretty awesome yeah, I think most people who want them can pick out what to use for them, though. It's a certain style that makes the trooper look kataphractic.

One could argue that Scythian refers to anyone from the area once known as Scythia, so yes, Scythian Kataphracts.

Why strong bow and not something smaller for horseback archery?
There is a chain mask item that I've seen in some mods. Copying items is pretty easy.
Maybe find a different type of mace too? The ones in native are short and I can't imagine them working well from horseback. Lamellar armor looks good, works well and is not horribly out of date for the Calradian time period. Mail could also work. But I think the horse armor is too modern.

That chain mask helmet is probably the rus helm which is in the games folders already. All you need to add it is the item editor and you don't need to be a modder to use that.
Edit: Actualy the khergit war helm would work better. Just give it a merchandise tag in the item editor.

I think the Spiked Mace is long enough to be effective from horseback (90 as I recall) and perhaps the slightly shorter winged mace. I agree the charger and warhorse armours are probably not ideal, perhaps a scale armour would be better. And the strongbow is fairly compact isn't it? I don't think it's unfeasible that it'd be used from horseback; the Khergit Bow is similar in size.

isnt it obvious?

scythian cataphracts...

Yea they had them. Almost all horse people did.

Strongbows are already compact and provide more damage for only slightly less speed. You don't need the Khergit speed because you aren't doing to be doing that much fast shooting but if you need to the Strongbow does it well enough.

I hate working with mods but if it's already in the game, how do I have it show up? Mind you i'm fairly computer inept when it comes to this sort of thing. I have vista btw.

I'll often use a scimitar or even a bardiche than a mace. Mace is more for prisoners than anything else.

I was confusing the strong bow with the war bow. My bad.

If you download the item editor you'd just have to open the right file in the native folder, use the drop down menu to find the helm (they're somewhere near the bottom) and check the merchandise flag on the left side.
The Timeless Kingdoms mods has a spiked helm with a chain veil. You could use D'sparil's guide above to copy it to native.

I meant that you can copy items with that guide to native.

If you want a mod like that, Sword of Damocles has kingdom management and only the native factions are present on the main map. There are five other factions that only contribute troops (no presence on the map) and one that invades Calradia at a certain point.

well this is a strange thread.

someone could make a fully armoured horse though, that would be cool.

as in, shiny gold from top to bottom.

mess with those troop thingies and give khergit lancers / veteran horse archers chargers or warhorses
