I thought of something that would fit well with the gameplay of Mount and Blade, and also create a very interesting and fun way to add story to the game.
Instead of making the player's character the main character in the stories, how about making the player's character simply another grunt, following around the heroes whom which the story revolves around? For example, you could make one of the heroes a commanding officer, and you could talk to him to ask him what your next objective may be. The player could than choose to carry out the mission with his party, "following" his commander. Or he could go around eliminating war parties, or simply play the game freeform.
It could make writing a story around a character more believable since you could include a personality and background without relying on the player to "follow" a particular role.
