In older versions of M&B a player could make a contract with a merchant to escort a caravan from one city to another. Since merchants have now changed it is understandable that this feature has been removed. However, why not allow a player to hire himself out to actually be part of a caravan? The player would get more money in his contract based on a combination of the amount of men he is bringing with him and their combat quality. If the player agrees to the contract then his company would actually be contained within the caravan and he wouldn't have any control over where it is moving. However, the player would have the ability to "bail" (by pressing "tab"?) on the caravan should he feel that it's too risky. Bailing should though, make it much more difficult for a player to be hiered in the future, or should cause merchants to offer much less if the player chooses to hire his company out as guards. I am not sure how this would work in regards to faction relations though..
Additional- I guess the hiring out would best be handled by using the guildmaster.
