Exactly. Spears are too weak in M&B, especially too slow. And what you said about armour is also what I feel. Mail and other metall armour is too weak, much too cheap and much too much used ingame. Javelins are fine I think, they have to be powerful at close ranges. I'm not able to hit persons far away, if the AI is you can cope with it by moving.

I'd love to be able to change between the three spear grips:

1) Overhand - Held over the head in a reverse grip, great for fighting on the shield wall, as the spear point naturally thrusts downwards over the top of an opponent's shield. VERY powerful blow due to the weight behind it.
2) Regular - As currently held in the game. Somewhat better choice for individual fighting. Good reach and speed, if less powerful
3) Couched - Held in one hand and couched under the arm. Allows the spear to be wielded at much closer range, while also generating a great deal of force as the arm extends in a thrust. Also facilitates swinging to slash with the point by supporting the back end of the spear against the body.

Let's see...

I see a lot of flanking and backstabbing by using teammates, none of which work in a 1v1 fight, which is where the problem with shield + spear is found. In your ONLY 1v1 fight with the spear, you chucked the shield and wielded it 2H pretty much immediately (trust me, I've already "discovered" the value of flanking  :roll:).
 
But is it unrealistic that the combination of spear and shield is inferior in close melee combat against shorter weapons like swords?
 
The problem is that while a shorter weapon does have advantages in a close-quarters fight, options a RL spear-fighter would have against the shorter swords or axes are nonexistent in the game. IE, the sweeping strikes over the shield to tag the back, smacking your opponent with the butt-end of the spear, shortening up the grip by couching, etc, as shown in the video I linked. Additionally, in real fighting you have three types of moving: Stepping, Springing/Lunging, and Leaping. In M&B and Warband, the latter two, which are very, VERY important for distance management, are missing, meaning you need an absurdly high athletics to be able to manage distance properly (trust me, being able to move 2-3 normal paces to the side on one lunge makes a HUGE difference over having to make each of those 2-3 steps individually).

i would hate to see any weapon get downgraded in damage i mean brytenwalda has the closest thing to a realism mod i mean even if i have a rusted dull sword im pretty sure that you would die in one or 2 hits i it had remotely strong hitting power, if anything it needs a one 2 hit kill system that can be turned on or turned of in the options menu when you camp.
 
This might look wierd ingame but how about adding swing to spears while having a shield equipped? Only for the shorter spears ofc.

On another note, thrusting with spears should be faster, at least the animation looks slow. Maybe that is all is needed to make spears feel more powerfull.
 
What I find annoying in competitions is that if you have a twohanded axe, block down because thats only way spears can thrust, they keep feinting 5 times/second. the moment you try to attack they strike and much faster than you. this is mostly in 1 on 1 rounds
