I'd like to historically accurate this statement, as mercenaries were compared to the peasant mob forces of the landlords and knights:
Mercenaries, no matter how professional, were just those who actually got paid for fighting and were not just forced to. Mostly because they brought own weapons.
All soldiers provided their own equipment I believe. This is why only nobles had horses, they were expensive. Mercenaries were the groups who were not bound to a lord, they hired themselves out for foreign wars.
