Items Stats and Price Modifications [RoY]

Users who are viewing this thread

Hey guys, I've offered to do the stats and price balancing of some of the items.

There are actually a lot of items here, and I can't test them out one by one, by myself:

Here's what I'm asking you guys to do: While playing the game, kindly take note of any quirks in the items and post them on this board. (No "OMG ITAMZ SO OVARPOWARD LOL!") Please be specific and take into account some items are meant to be a little "imbalanced".

Things I'm looking out for:

  • Inconsistencies in ranged weapon quantity-to-price ratios.
ex. 7-bag Javelin is the same price as 14-bag Javelin
  • Item A is overall stronger than Item B but is much cheaper.
ex. Axe A is faster, has a longer reach, and deals the same damage as Axe B, but Axe B is more expensive.
  • Item C is really weak/strong but really expensive/cheap.
ex. Seax A is 10000 gold.
    ex2. Bearded Axe A is 50 gold.
  • Item D has incorrect modifiers.
ex. Spangenhelm X has "tattered" modifier.
ex2. Tabard Y has "Rusty" modifier.

Thanks for your time and help.

Some of the price inconsistencies could be considered as being within a sort of historical context of how much stuff costs.  The creator of Onin no Ran has a similar thing going, where he's trying to base equipment prices on historical data, rather than effectiveness.  I dunno if you'd want to go there, though...

But yeah, the prices for ranged equipment are definitely messed up.  I've seen bags of arrows with like, five arrows.  They were cheap, but I'd think they'd be a bit useless.

In terms of stats, I've seen two versions of the great axe.  One is longer and slower, but does less damage.  The other is shorter and faster, but does more damage.  (47/50-something damage, respectively, I think.)  Wouldn't it make sense for it to be the other way around, since the longer axe would have more momentum?

Also, will Yew Bows/Hror-type arrows be available to the player at some point?  I managed to steal one from one of my archers during a battle and I have to say, those things are pretty sweet.

The Heror isn't a shop item, neither is the Yew Bow, you have to steal them from other people.

5 arrows in a quiver you say? well I don't wanna tinker with quiver sizes, just stats.

I'll take a look at those axes.

9-arrow and 18-arrow quivers are more for certain troops than the player. If an archer is too heavily armored or too skilled hand-to-hand, I usually give them smaller quivers. And Yew Bows and Heror aren't available to the player because they're so damn good. (Well, Yew Bows have horrid accuracy.)

Ah, I see.  It's the same for the throwing axes and stuff, ya?

Well, either way, there are some odd prices in general for most stuff in the archery store.  Stuff like ultra-expensive throwing axes with 2 ammo.  If they're there for the troops, great, but shouldn't they be cheaper?

I can pull up the archery store and give some specific examples if you want.

Other than that, I think there should be a more significant difference between 2h and 1h weapons.  As it is, with a bit of luck you can find a 1h axe that deals as or almost as much as a 2h, but is much faster.  I also think swords should have something to distinguish them, perhaps being faster than axes, since currently there's no real incentive to use a sword besides the visual appeal.

I might also suggest increasing the bows accuracy a bit.  I think I saw this mentioned elsewhere, but I'd suggest making the hunting bow as accurate as the practice bow used in tournaments, the shortbow as accurate as the hunting bow is now, etc.  As it is, half my shots the arrows go flying off at a right angle to the direction I fired them in.[/exaggeration]
Likewise thrown weapons need a little bump in accuracy.  Currently they're only accurate at a distance which essentially means that you get one throw in before you have to switch to a melee weapon.

I'd also suggest increasing the damage difference.  A masterwork hunting bow does 40, I think, and a masterwork longbow does 48.  I think dropping the hunting bow, raising the longbow, and leaving the shortbow where it is would be good in damage terms.

Currently there are two varieties of javelin.  A sort with a lot of javelins per pack, which does less damage, and a sort with fewer javelins (fourteen and seven, respectively, I think) which does more.  I'd suggest naming them separately, something like 'heavy javelins' and 'light javelins' and giving them different menu icons.  Likewise for the throwing axes.

I'd also suggest increasing the quality and price of metal armors vs. leather/cloth.
