Currently, items have names and appearances, and that's it. Could the possibility of more lengthy descriptive text be added? This would show up on hover, like everything else.

Good idea. Things that describe the structure of the item and maybe even history (history of course in the universe where were are playing).

In Neverwinter Nights every item, no matter how unimportant, had a short description or story. It had no direct impact on the game, but it gave a good atmosphere and made the game much more immersive as a result. It stopped the weapons from being just another killing tool and gave them an individual character.
For example, your first wooden shield could say,
"This shield is one of many given from Zendar's armoury to help defend the town against persistant River Pirate raids."
Perhaps right-clicking on the item in the inventory could show the description.

Actually, this could be another option for weapon/armour merchants. You click on it and at random, like a Tip of the Day, he describes something about a random weapon. I think the random description should be repeatable if you ask him again without leaving town. If you do leave town, or go to the merchants or tavern, and come back, he'll have a different piece of info.

Yea, i agree with ingolifs it would keep the game interesting and you could find things out about a weapon u didnt ever know about

Random tip #1. Only 1 handed polearms can be couched. Do not press the attack button to couch a lance, just gain enough speed and then aim the tip of the lance at an enemy, sit back, eat some popcorn, and take pleasure as you watch from your chair your enemy's head exploding.

Possible reply...

Attack Button? Popcorn? What is this you speak of, old man?! I'm leaving!
