Is there value in owning both M&B Original + Warband?

So I'm planning on gifting M&B but I am really confused… (I've been away for a while)

Is Warband > Original?

I mean, would there be a reason to own both M&B Vanilla and Warband if you were buying for the first time?

Is the single-player gameplay way different in Warband than in Vanilla?

Is the single-player gameplay way better than in Vanilla?
The best reason: It helps support the developers.

And if you want to play the beta before the release, then you should/have to buy the original.

It's pretty much what Mount&Blade was meant to be, in terms of singleplayer.

Besides that, there are a lot of good mods for vanilla, I'm not sure if Warband will be able to run them. (I think it will though) But as Alec{zacool} said, the best reason is that it helps the Devs.

I know the single-player has some new features to it, but is it the same campaign as vanilla M&B? Are there new factions or cities or… is it still even Calradia? Does it take place later in time, or is it the same setting?

Also, if I bought M&B today is there any kind of discount for Warband?

I'm surprised I can't find any of these questions in the FAQ.

It's the same thing, but with more features and a new faction with new cities.

So far as I can tell, the single player's more or less the same as original Mount and Blade but there will be some new features added such as a new faction.

There are rumours that there will be a discount for original M&B owners but nothing definite.

I think most of the features aren't mentioned in the FAQ because the devs are sort of making it up as they go.

You don't get a discount for any other game, so why should this be the case with Warband?
Maybe because it's a superset of the original game?

(And yes, that's a question.)

It's going to be released in nearly a month! And they're already accepting pre-orders at GamersGate!

Perhaps I should rephrase it this way:

The Madden NFL series comes out with a new version each year, with some slightly new features each time around.

Nevertheless, each year it's still the same game; 30 teams, play a full season, career mode, etc.

Is that kind of how it's going to work with Mount&Blade: Warband? If this was Madden NFL 10 and 11 was about to come out, would you wait for 11?

I'd buy both because I'm a snobby rich boy named Zexe and I get to go surfing every weekend and I get to drink red wine even though I'm thirteen.

*in reality*

I don't even like Madden, but if 11 was about to come out, and in this hypothetical question I like it, I'd  wait buy 11.

EDIT: But if it were for a medieval or real-time strategy game I'd buy both. All depends on your preference and budget.

Last night i asked Armağan about that over Teamspeak; he said they won't be able to give that discount.

Ah well, thanks for the update on that.

If I hadn't bought M&B, and had only found the game now, I would advise just playing the demo (you can play as long as you want, but your character can't get beyond level 7 in their skills). It would be a good idea to try M&B first, as practice at the original M&B will help you start off in Warband and you will see if you like the game (I expect you have already tried the demo though). The advantage to buying M&B now would be getting into the beta for Warband multiplayer, so you can get a taste of the on line gameplay. If you were to buy M&B, and then Warband, you wouldn't find a reason to go back to M&B at all because the gameplay is sandbox; I.E. no storyline to play through.

They are basically the same in terms of general gameplay, but the combat system has been improved, there is a new physics engine, the graphics are significantly better in Warband and Warband overall looks more polished. Furthermore, there are changes to diplomacy, for instance the ability to marry to improve relations with other lords.

It seems then the primary plus to buying M&B now is access to the beta for Warband now. Otherwise… I'm inclined to agree with DanAngleland.

The word "Expansion" typically implies that said Expansion is meant to be had in addition to the original. In other words, you need the original to have the expansion.

I'm not sure if Warband is going to be a stand-alone game. It could be, but I'm not sure if it is. If it isn't stand-alone, you will need the original M&B to play it.

Warband will have better singleplayer and Multiplayer, but the original will have many mods, mainly thinking about TLD, that alone is a reason to buy M&B... But... this depends on your budget of course...

It is Calradia, but its a complete new map + the new faction. Also long-term playing and relationships to other lords factions will (hopefully) work much better. And you will be finally able to be king and some other things, i would say its basicly the same but much more detailed.
