Is there any way to instigate a war?

I haven't backed a claimant yet, will that do it? I'm a lord of Rhodoks and we have only been to war with the Swadians. I've all most eliminated them but some how I'm gaining rep with all the other factions except the horse archer faction. I use Nord troops and helped them against Swadians but no idea why all the other factions like me.

I could go raid towns but then I'd lose some of my more important heroes. So I stay away from town and caravan raiding unless it's to assist a friendly lord, the no one complains.
I did try a search first and didn't find the answer.

If you just want factions to not like you, you could try attacking caravans, unless you have Marnid or something. If you want an actual war, ask lords for quests and you should get one to start a war sooner or later.

To add to Tzsak's post, if a faction does not like you but is not at war with your faction the lords of your faction won't help in combat.
Otherwise you either have to wait until a faction declares war by itself or you have to get a quest from one of the lords.

The instigate war quest also requires you to raid two caravans, so you'll still have to do some of that.

You cant instigate a war, but you can become hostile with a faction just by attacking one of their lords or caravans

There is a quest you can do to begin a war. I fought as a nord against the Khergits, when Lord Logarson offered me a "sneaky job" to begin a war against the Rhodoks. Of course I did it, Rhodoks are so fun to fight with! Huscarls/Veterans + crappy spearmen is a match!

As soon as you attack any caravan or lord of the faction you want to fight, your favour with them drops to -3. If you then attack a castle or own their favour drops to -40, and from then on in YOU are at war with them, but not your faction, so no-one in your faction will help you. In that sense, you cannot instigate a war.

you can always go to a lord, offer your demands, attack them, and have your own private war. I had my own war with kergit and swadia for about 500 game days, then they made peace (the khanate and swadia i mean) and i made up with the swadians quick as i could, stopped their war with my faction, which hardly even defended our territory, much less attacked theirs. however, the AI lords are weak and relatively stupid so it is pretty easy to take out a faction by yourself without modifying your character.

also you don't have to worry about raiding that much. it upsets some of your companions, but so long as you aren't raiding continuously, there won't really be a morale change, so they won't leave you.
