this most recent playthrough of mine, i ran out of time /quest failed. this is the 2nd or 3rd time this has happened to me. i just get to playing and lose track of time since there is no mention of a time frame or a counter of days ticking down to tell when its getting close. i've always restarted into a new game to try again, but this time i am loathe to since i have a really good character and game going.

You're not missing anything. The quest's incomplete and there's no resolution. I don't even bother doing any of it anymore
Same, you can even create your own kingdom without doing the quest, the only thing you avoid is constant warfare and unstability
