Is there any way to avoid this battle?

The function will only work if you have very high relations with that lord. (about 30 or higher I think). If you use this option, your relation with that lord will drop by 7 I think.

Hope that helped.

I actually just did it as my default cause I like the idea of giving them the option....(role playing) but I was really surprised when the betrayed King Harlaus said he would let me go this time. I didn't know he could be generous in the face of civil war. It let me go change out my unit setup and then come back to face him like a man... 9 companions, 16 swadian knights, and the rest huscarls on open field. I didn't lose a man that whole battle. The king was knocked out by a lance in the charge. Poor poor soul.

Thank you for an answer that was actually helpful.

And I guess I shouldn't be surprised that Swadius was the first to reply.

Er, if your relation is that high than why would the question even come up?!

It's lower. I've had a lord with lower relations, about 10, and he let me go.

The lords will attack you (and hell even raid your villages) if you are an enemy of their faction, regardless of their relationship with you.
