Is there a way to change the starting stats in Warband?

I would like my hero to start out with 10 points in "Training" already - my troops train too slow and die too fast.

How would I do this?

you need to modify your characters stats in documents/mount & blade warband/characters you will see a txt (character name).txt.
if you dont have a characters folder inside the warband folder then you have to launch the game load your save click character then statistics and then export.
then you'll know what to do once you open the txt file.
once done load your save, then characters>statistics>import done

or you could just toggle cheats then press ctrl+X while you are on ur character screen to gain 1kexp

But is there a way to change the game files directly so that I can start @ 10 Training regardless of the character history I choose?

agreed, the first time i played i cheat alot but on the second time i decided not to cheat and its fun and very rewarding. you can't gain anything without a sacrifice.
also i recommend starting on sawadia, very few bandits and strong recruits, you can also use the training grounds to train them

Use the search function to find out what the module files are. or just look around, there are entire boards dedicated to modding.
