Is there a way to assign party leaders to lead specific units?

BoBB

My party leaders are all mounted and when they're in my army, 1 inevitably gets assigned to lead infantry when I already have a companion in that role. Now the mounted guy will charge solo into the enemy and get massacred.

Is there something I've missed...like a key to switch or something?

No just underdeveloped like so much of this game. My first command in every battle is to get the infantry to dismount..daft as they already are..the're infantry but it does get the general off his horse and joining the infantry.

Sad really.

And it's not like we get time to place everything nicely pre battle. Every fight is a mad rush to get everyone in place before the enemy calvary arrives.

Hi BoBB, go to the party screen and give your companions the number (one to eight) and therefore assign them to the branch you would like them to join at the start of the battle. For my part, any companion I hire is choosen in order to fulfill a special role. An experienced footsoldier to lead my infantry, a skillfull archer to lead the archers and so on... If you use cheats you may even give them a banner (find it at the end of the missile weapons) and you are always aware where the frontline is. Good luck chap!

If you're worried about companions rushing ahead because they're mounted and the troops they lead aren't then just tell the formation they're leading to dismount. That works pretty well for me.

u never see a human been press 5 f1 , 3 f2 f 3 and so many commands so quick like , in a bannerlors battle is about to begin

To build up on what @Trenchnut - formation will be led by the first from top companion that has its number assigned to that formation - so by default 1-infrantry, 2-archers, 3-meele cav and so on and on. If you assign 2 companions with same number the one on top of your troop list will be leader, but if he is knocked out or killed 2nd in command will take over the formation.
Also while leading 150+ troops in your party you can really dismount your infrantry and archer leading companions for good - it will not affect your speed much...

Good stuff. I did not know these. Thank you.

I think the OP is talking about armies rather than parties.

The experience is worst for Battania, where you sometimes find yourself with a noble on foot leading your cavalry comically running along behind them, and if you have non Battannian lords, you'll invariably end up with one mounted leading infantry.

I expect that down the track, we'll have the chance to choose who leads what, otherwise the pre-battle screen that shows you who is leading what parts of the army is pointless. .

Of course, for the cynics in this thread, you're playing a game that is in development. There will be a thread in Slack or Teams or what-ever office management software they're using with a date and someone's name hashtagged into it. Stop whining like petulant children, you've paid to be a development resource for them.

Hi Trenchnut, but that assignment gets superseded by Party leaders in an Army?

The only solution right now is to order those units to dismount....which isn't great because that's just a whole series of instructions I have to repeat each fight. Gets kinda tedious.

I don't suppose there's a mod to fire off a queue of orders with 1 button...

Anyhow, I'm done with 1.5.4. After so many months since release, nothing major seems to have changed (yes we have perks but that's never really been game changing except for maybe Disciplinarian). Relationship gains seem to have disappeared too? I've rescued many a lord from capture but after 3 years of campaigning with the ungrateful Sturgians, it turns out I have gained 0 relations. That's kinda broken and should have been fixed by now.

As there aren't any working mods that address this...there's no sense playing further. I'm not interested in grinding stupid fetch quests to increase relations.

While I'm at it, Kingdom creation restrictions (need 1 town or castle) needs to be lifted. I want to create my own Kingdom so I can get a fief...

Not much seems to have been developed since I bought this at release. I guess it's more stable for most people now but from a gameplay perspective, the only major thing that seems to have changed is that Kingdom creation is now detached from the silly quest.

I'd be satisfied to know that these features are planned and in development. I can appreciate it takes time.

I'm just not confident they actually have a plan. Look at the rollout of gear for example. This should be the easiest thing to work out but version after version they stuff it up bad. I don't quite understand how a company that has developed such a brilliant engine can mess up simple values so badly. Who knows, maybe that was assigned to the intern.

Edit: I must have misunderstood the OP, my response should be ignored.

No need to bother with mount/dismount.

Just don't give a horse to the companion that leads the infantry formation? Is the problem not solved? If you are going to utilize your formation, a foot soldier being the leader of a foot formation is only logical.

If you don't care about formation leaders but want to give horses to all companion, and make sure they survive without rushing, then assign all companions to horse archer or cavalry formations.

If you are in an army, other party leaders (possibly your clan members) will assign themselves to lead different groups. The player currently has no control over it.

Mexxico mentioned they have no overall design spec or anything, even now.

My misunderstanding. Thanks for the correction. Also edited my post.
