So far from what I seen it looks as if companions are still fufill the same role of fighting alongside you, but now with the new addition of them acting as meatshields for you in the event of an assassination against you in the streets or taverns.
My proposal goes as this: We need to be able to interact with our companions more.
-Companion related quests: A lord has killed his family and he wants you to take revenge. Or missing a lost item and would long to find it again, or a hard situation. Some companions can only be obtained from quests.
-Now this might sound perverted, but we need to be able to marry our companions. I can see this creating tragic love stories we all would love to read about when our battle buddy and wife of 13 ingame years died tragically during a raid from the Sturgian Kingdom.
-More roles to fufill. One companion could be assigned the horse master role and he could control your horse supply, and even give bonuses to party speed. Or a doctor role like Jeremus who heals troops during battle.
