Is having a bigger character purely cosmetic?

Does giving yourself a taller character at the start of the game affect anything other than presenting a larger target to archers? Is there any stat increase/tradeoff?

I haven't seen any HP difference so far between tall and short characters, nor does there seem to be any difference in strength. I wonder if larger characters have increased reach.

It is easier to smack a short character's head and you have a bit more reach.

I have a manlet Swordsman companion that I beat easily in tournaments. I mean sure I haven't given him the best equipment but still...

When I create a mounted archer character, I always make them as small as possible for the smaller hitbox. When I create a mounted melee or on-foot character, I make them as tall as possible for the extra reach and being able to attack over my comparatively shorter troops heads. Just wield an 2H axe and do an overhead swing literally over the heads of 2 of my own troops to kill the guy in front of them. Works like a charm. You also don't need to swing upwards to hit people in the head. A normal side swing does the trick, making dueling or smaller numbers combat a bit easier. The only downside is that you do have a larger hitbox.

Longer reach vs providing a bigger target, I usually stick with midgets for an archer or cav playthrough and giant for a infantry one

Tall character horseback was terrible in early builds but they fixed animation.

It has not + and - direct affects yet. One of the complex and valuable subsystem at cha-custumization.

This is actually not true, every character size should result in the same reach, at least in the Multiplayer:

This is from a thread Height difference does NOT affect reach. in the archived Beta board.

This was from the Beta period, yes, but i think it is still the same. The only positive from a taller character is that all your side swings go straight to the shorter opponent's head or neck (inf vs inf),and the biggest downside is that shields do not scale with the character height, thus they offer less coverage for bigger targets, allowing for easier leg shots and hip shots.

Weird because I actually have a the tallest character I can make in single player and I feel like it's easier to hit someone while not being hit especially when I'm back-peddling. I guess it's just my imagination.

I do leave some possibility that SP is differently designed. I was talking about MP specificaly, since every advantage/disatvatage has a greater impact in PvP.

Piconi what you mentioned is incorrect. Your way of analyzing this matter lacks trustworthiness as well.

A better way to measure this is to put a shortest girl VS a tallest man with the same weapon. Then make both do a rightswing and see what happens.

As you will see if you properly analyze this (considering you haven't) you will see that the tall male indeed has a signifcant reach advantage compared to the short female.

This test seems rather lackluster, given that the thrust stop as soon as the weapon connect, and why not test more attack direction? Really unsatisfying conclusion and need more tests IMO.

I happen to know for a fact that having a higher character is intended to give more reach, i'm just suspicious if it's working as intended, that's why i forwarded this to developers.
If there is a reach difference, after all the testing it is found to be so miniscule that it drops to the statistical error margin, and IMO should be fixed to be more impactful.

That was Noudelle's video and thread, everyone else is free to test for themselves as they wish, especially those who don't have any video or other evidence to back their claims, thus, as they phrased it, those claims lack trustworthiness and proper analysis until then.

FYI, we do know that taller characters have an easier time kicking people in multiplayer. Before that became known I felt like the only tall player out there

dont think this should have too much impact, they should fix the size import bug as well. Its just frustrating missing small people due to uneven ground.

I agree about the height itself meaning a miss sometimes, i was talking specificaly about the reach.
If the difference in reach itself was more significant (rather than the 5cm it now is) along with the other advantages/disatvantages it brings, choosing the proper height of your MP character could be the real "rock, paper, scissors" choice, adding a bit of depth.

However, for the competitive modes in ranked matchmaker i believe the height should be uniform.

it already is a rock paper scissor reward for kicking alone, the height has advantages for fighting cavalry

didnt noudelle test range aswell? and proved that higher characters have more range

It has been nerfed heavily (50% even), that is my main gripe

I see people don't quite understand each other entirely what the other one is trying to say, so i decided that was all i will be saying on this thread.
