A mob of Iranians were unstopped by the Iranian police and seemingly guided to attacking the British embassy in Tehran  this is terrible its seems portaraits of her majesty the Queen were destroyed, the Union jack burnt and the embassy staff taken hostage by the mob and all the time the police stood by watching and it seems in some cases also joining in  I didnt even know the Iranians were angry towards us.

*facepalm.*

Also, this is being covered in the "War with Iran an increasing possibility " thread.

I would have thought the Iranians would be quite good at storming embassies and taking diplomats hostage, given their past experience.
One can only assume that their hearts weren't really in it this time.

We already returned the favor for the first time by storming their liasion office in Iraq and holding their diplomatic mission staff prisoner for over a year. I am guessing however that it would have been quite dangerous to attempt another storming of a U.S. embassy in Tehran since I think they usually have Marine Corps personnel guarding the building. So perhaps there was some direction in the targeting... I am still not sure what exactly their beef is with the UK.

It would be impossible for them to storm the US Embassy in Tehran - because it no longer exists and hasn't for 30 years. The former embassy is, if memory serves, the HQ of the Revolutionary Guard now. US interests in Iran are handled via the Swiss consulate.

Because the unjustified invasion during WW2. Come on...poor Iran was neutral and you did it for helping evil commies!

Now we have the US president and FN Secretary General to declare "democratic crusades".

nahh, its all about money, once we pull out of Iraq we will be able to get oil for 30 bucks a tank, ****ing government  playing with the lives of million of oil....

Dont think we are pulling out 100% will all be private contracts from here on out.

And did everyone get out safe?

Not quite up on the history of Iran I take it?

Though yeah, we did get there first

I didn't know about this but this isn't like the British were responsible for the hostage taking. They tried to resolve the situation. Or am I missing something?

Ah that would explain it. Cheers.

You know, by the title I thought this was an official raid by the Iranian authorities. While the police probably should have intervened (depending on the size of the mob and the number of police present), you can't really blame the entire nation for the actions of an unsanctioned mob.

Yes yes, its harsh to blame Iran for the actions of the poorly disguised Republican Guard student protestors.

I don't think he is blaming the whole country? In a situation where diplomatic figures and locations are concerned, the nation hosting them are often legally obligated to protect these individuals and their work places sometimes at the expense of the common citizen. If it isn't the case that there are no legal protections for these individuals, it's quite unlikely that there would be any sort of long term placement of ambassadors and setting up of embassies in the country. There is nothing special about an unruly flash mob that grants them any more legal standing above their positions as citizens in diplomatic matters. In the same way that the American government would be guilty of negligence or intentional ignorance if they allowed a mob of their own citizens to storm the UN general assembly, the Iranian government too are susceptible to these responsibilities if they allow a mob of their own citizens to storm embassies they are legally bound to protect.

And that's assuming they didn't instigate the mob in the first place. They certainly had NO problem cracking down on pro-democracy supporters.

Is it so hard to believe that with the continued assassinations, support for the MEK, explosions, sanctions, pressure to stop legitimate Uranium enrichment and war threats that some of the locals might be just a tad pissed??? I ******** would be. I am still not sure why the British embassy was made a target however. Guess the next best thing to the U.S. embassy. In this case however I assume the police even joined in since they probably emphasized with the notion.

Well no. It's hard to believe that the locals are involved when many of the protesters are carrying placards stating quite openly they're members of the Republican guard though.
