This might have been sugested before but I think the ventory is highly unrealistc as your character can easily carry 9+ platemails 2 handed swords helmets, sacks of salt or whatever in his backpack plus several thousands of gold coins, isn't that weird?

for that I would sugest adding pack animals like donkeys, mules and camels (maybe even wagons and carts) which should have a large inventory area
also as combat mounts it would be awesome to have camels (bactrians or dromedaries whichever you like) that would scare horses (or just impose a penalty to horse mounted warriors) also elephants and wardogs could be added.. just my 2 cents

I agree on having more available animals to carry stuff, but it would be cool as well to be able to ride camels as quite a lot of muslims did in those days.

Horses would freak out if they see a camel for the first time, - which is what happened during the historical battle everyone speaks of here ::)
I would just like to point out, that a few days around camels, horses would not have any problems being around them. It will just take some time for the horses to get used to. There is also a lot of horse psychology involved which may increase this fear initially, but I wont bother go into it since its irrelevant ::D

While cammels would survive longer than horses in the desert, and thus would be able to go through longer distances without water / rest, I can guess of quite a number of examples why they would not have as much advantages as horses during combat. Again, this goes into psychology (eg. horses in nature have a great deal more predators to worry about than camels etc.) which I won't bother go into. But just for reference, that's pretty much why the desert tribes used horses as well as camels for wars. If my memory serves me right, something like horses more for war, and camels more for long distance transport. (no I'm not that old, if my memory serves me right to the times I studied all this history lol)

And I would still personally like to have horses worked on a little more before other mounts are introduced, since it would otherwise only be a matter of having the same thing with a different graphic. Just my oppinion though..

Regarding inventory, I would tend to agree that we need carts / pack horses / etc. Currently, adding horses to a full inventory, will improve your speed, but does not increase space. It would also make sense to have things such as plate mails take up more than one slot to balance all of this out ::D

Perhaps it was just "myth" - but I thought there was something about the smell of camels that made horses very upset...

I think a plate amour set would take up less space than 40kg of linen. i mean, go to the merchents in Curaw, i think, and there are things like meat iorn ect. stacked outside the merchent. Caravans would be good. But, WTH wasn't this posted on before?

Its not a myth, it was a big issue for when the horses saw camels, and other humans riding them for the first time. I would tend to argue its more psychological than a smell thing, but it is very temporary. A very basic comparison would be if you get sent to mars, and see a martian who is the same size as you, for the first time, you would assume its a scary monster out to kill you no matter what it looks like. This would not nesessarily happen if you see a new animal when you go to another country, because you kind of feel at "home" on your planet. It was pretty similar when horses where taken into the desert, and saw an animal which was not "imprinted" into their genes from the generations before. (for example an Arab horse is very unlikely to react to camels the same way as a quarterhorse, when encountered for the first time)

So yes, it actually also includes smell, since that is one of the descriptive senses, but its really more genetical / psychological ::). This is pretty much a simple as I can explain it. Don't think too hard, because its slightly more complex (just like everything else with horses because their thought process is different to ours) so it may not be a perfect example ::) I may also be wrong since I'm not an expert in camels, and it is possible that they produce some chemical to ward off parasites - and which horses may be sensitive to, associating that with the smell of a predator. But that would once again bring me to the point that after a while horses would not worry about it.  Just think I will try clear this up while we are on the subject ::)

baggage train - you can lose it if you lose a battle too!

Great idea.  I'll think about it, and if I come up with anything I'll let you know.  No promises!!

I remember that in UO a woodsman or miner could own "pack horses". Here a player would be able to dump excess wood/ore etc.

Maybe in correlation with the size of your army you would also need to pay up a one time extra fee for a pack horse? Lets say (to keep it within the game and not have to bie ULTRA-realistic) per 20 Footmen 1 Packhorse, per 30 Knights 2 Packhorses, per 40 Crossbowmen 3 Packhorses? Also these would have an additional upkeep cost ( 1 Packhorse / 10 Gold f.e)

If you have a large scale army 90+, you will then also have more inventory "backpacks" for selection, not only your personal one. Possibly this solution would also be simpler to implement but still fit within the game mechanics.
