Features descriptions and others:

Naval Warfare
In Europe 1200 Warband, you are able to go anywhere, from anywhere. Lords, caravans, every single party uses it. This has also made us able to include places like Mallorca, Ajaccio etc, that otherwise would be nonsense to make. To make the travel time more realistic, all parties travel 80% faster on water. So go out there, and become the master of the sea.

Map, Settlements and Lords
This is a rather major part on what we want, basically we want to expand this part to a much more epic level. We are going to make the map twice as big, and add tons of new settlements and lords. Here is a map that Cèsar have made over what Iberia should look like, Note: This is a rather dated version, but I didn't have any other.
sete1200spain.jpg

War parties
A problem with the whole idea of more settlements and lords is that it is much easier to find settlements and lords for the western/feudal factions than for the others. Basically we would end up with lets say France having 40 lords while Bulgaria having 14, to avoid such unbalanced factions we are introducing a new feature called the warparty feature:

Factions having less lords than they should, or with other words, who are weaker than they should be compared to western factions, will be assigned a certain number of warparties that bring them up to the strength they should have. Warparties are basically just armies without any lord as leader, but they do still follow the real lords on campains, besiege castles, and fight enemies just as any real lord would do. Warparties will be leaded by a troop called “warparty leader”, or “general” or something random, these leaders can’t give quests, can’t hire you as a mercenary, and can’t own fiefs. They are pretty much just there.

Ambushes
In Europe 1200 we also want to represent the tactics that certain cultures used in warfare. Therefore we have included ambushes for Gaelic factions. Gaelic factions are the Irish Kingdoms, the Kingdom of Connacht, the Kingdom of Mann, and the Kingdom of the Isles. If you attack one of their armies there are a certain chance that you'll run into an ambush. Also if you are a vassal of one of these factions you will sometime have the oppurtunity to ambush your enemies yourself.

New Recruitment System
Well, the whole way of recruitment are going to be reworked, currently a serf can rise to be a knight by fighting some battles, which is not really realistic. The new way of recruitment are gonna look somewhat like this:

You can recruit from all settlements (villages, towns, castles), but you can only recruit from castles you own. Each type of settlements will have different troops trees, that of cause variate between different factons. The different settlements troop trees represent the feudal system much better. An example could be this:

Knightly troop tree (castle)
Page --- Squire --- Donzel --- Bachelor --- Knight --- Banneret

Urban militia troop tree (city)

                                                        --- Mounted crossbowman
                                                        l
                                  --- Horseman --- Veteran horseman
                                  l
Militian --- Spearman --- Veteran spearman --- Pikeman
            l                                                        l
            l                                                        --- Swordsman --- Loricatus
            l
            --- Archer --- Crossbowman --- Veteran crossbowman

Professional sergeant troop tree (castle)
                                  --- Halberdier
                                  l
Footman --- Sergeant --- Veteran sergeant
              l
--- Crossbowman --- Veteran crossbowman --- Mounted crossbowman

Rural levy troop tree (village)
                          --- Skrimisher --- Raider --- Horseman
                          l
        --- Bowman --- Marksman / Hunter
      l
Serf --- Pawn --- Footman --- Spearman --- Veteran spearman

Tournaments
This is the biggest feature we've ever included. Basically we wanted to make a complete remake of tournaments to make them represent how they actually worked in year 1200. The tournaments had so much importance in medieval Europe we couldn't just leave them out.

The interesting part comes when you're a noble, because when you are not, "tournaments" are excactly like in Warband, just that they are renamed to pitfights.

Noble tournaments however, are a complete diffrent story. Nobles we don't use in the mod as lords, are fighting for diffrent houses all across Europe. A team for a house has eight members. All these teams fight at towns where feasts are held if the town is within their circuit.

tournamentcircuits.jpg

So, if we take the Iberian circuit, the five biggest teams would probably be the teams from the House of Barcelona (Kings of Aragon), the three diffrent Houses of Burgundy (Kings of Castille, Kings of Leon, Kings of Portugal), and House of Jimenez (Kings of Pamplona), these teams will have the best fighters in Iberia, since they would probably be the houses who would be able to attract most nobility.

If the player wants to join a team, he has to have homage to a faction, and he has to have a certain amount of renown, depending on team and circuit. The French circuit is extremely tough to get into, and extremely tough to win. While the Scandinavian, Eastern and Roman circuits will be far easier getting into, but the prestige and reward for doing such wont be as high.

You can make extreme fortunes in these tournaments, but you can loose extreme fortunes as well, and note that winning these tournaments will be far more tough than anything you've tried before. The fighters have the best equipment available, and have very good skills.

The way the player join the team is by talking to a member of the team he wants to join, you can sometime meet people from the teams at feasts, if the feast is held at one of their circuits factions (you wont be able to meet people fighting for the Count of Flanders in a feast at Krakow). If the player meet the requirements for the team, he'll be let in, and get a message/quest to join a noble tournament when it's held, this can only happen once every twentieth day, to keep the player away from being invited to tournaments every forth day, and not being able to do anything else. If you're invited to a tournament, and not show up, you'll be kicked from your team, you can rejoin later however.

Scandinavia:

Lastly, Cèsar has made some dialogs that describe this way more deeply and exciting. You get these dialogs when talking to the tournament guys you will eventually meet at feasts. I had to describe it breifly (I know it probably not seems that way) if I didn't want it to fill two pages, so if you feel like something is left unfinished, don't worry, you can learn all about it from the people in game when we get that far.

AI Calculation
Since Europe 1200 will be one of the most demanding mods ever for Warband, I had to come up with some system that would make weak PC able to run the mod as well. I introduced a limited way to custom your own AI (which is what is the most perfomance costing thing), you can basically choose between 4 levels in the camp menu (game settings sub-menu): Very light, light, balanced, heavy. How much the AI calculates depends on your choice, but you shouldn't actually notice a big diffrence between even heavy and very light in terms of gameplay, although there can be a big diffrence in terms of perfomance.

Knights and Bannerets with own coat of arms:
Each knight and banneret (the regular troops) will have their own coat of arms to represent historical accuracy. No knight had the coat of arms of his lord, so know, you'll see even your own knights running around with many different colors.

Army composition:
In E1200 Warband, the way lords armies are composed is completely reworked. First of all, you wont find militia in an army of a lord who doesn't hold a town. Secondly, if a lord from the Kingdom of England get a village/city with French culture, he will have English nobles and sergeants, but French serfs/militia. This way we represent how the higher layers of the army changed with new rulers, but also how the low level sociaty didn't loose it's culture.

No idea. Cèsar is the companion guy.

They wont belong to any circuit.

But if they are on their own  , how are they going to attend tournaments ? If playing with Rascia or Bulgaria i cant join tournaments ?

Nothing holds you back from joining a Roman team if you make peace with them.

Aha , well i didnt get that i thought that you can only join circuit where your faction is... thanks cruger

Though I still wonder what kind of knightly tournaments did the Romans have.
As for Bogdan - he's a Bulgarian. Cesar entrusted me with writing his dialogues (did that a month or so ago, hope he likes them) and I'm almost proud with the result (I dare say he [Bogdan] has some pieces of me, though he's obviously not entirely like me). I even wrote a detailed backstory about him (yeah, I kinda grew to love this guy while making him up).

I'm sure Cèsar knows something, otherwise I don't think he would have suggested it.

Hehe I dont mind him being bulgarian he will definitely be in my army. (Bogdan means atleast in serbian but i think in bulgarian too , Bog - God , dan - given , Bogom dan - Gift from god or Given by god  nice name NikeBG

You should think of a last name, or a nickname for Bogdan, it will be better.
This way, he is just Bogdan, which reminds a lot like some celebrities, like Cher, Sting, Prince, Coolio, Enya, Fabio , or Moby...

My propositions:
Bogdan the Bulgarian Bastard of Balkans (4 letter B's)
Bogdan the Slayer of men, Raper of women, Pillager of villages
Bogdan the Friend of men, Guardian of women, Builder of villages
Bogdan the God-given (literal meaning - God-given the God-given, or Bogdan the Bogdan)

Do not worry Serbian, Cruger promised me that there will be a Serbian hero-companion, when they start making a new 1200 mod for the next game in M&B series - Mount and Blade - The Rage of Calradians

Hehe I dont mind him being bulgarian he will definitely be in my army. (Bogdan means atleast in serbian but i think in bulgarian too , Bog - God , dan - given , Bogom dan - Gift from god or Given by god  nice name NikeBG
The name was chosen by Cesar, so all credits should go to him. Considering he (Bogdan) is a quite... religious guy, I'm guessing that name was chosen on purpose.

DrevniDabar 说:
You should think of a last name, or a nickname for Bogdan, it will be better.
In the Middle Ages, people (and especially commoners) usually used only one name and eventually their title/profession. And in Bogdan's case a single name is especially sufficient.

Cruger 说:
Send me the dialog and eventually item/skill detail and I'll add him straight away.
Hmm, okay, I guess. Though I haven't made items and skill lists, except for a couple of short notes. I'm leaving it to you and Cesar to decide how to build him up (though, at least in terms of equipment, I imagine him starting with something similar to the native Jeremus).

I always thought that it was the same deal for all other countries before the 20th century...

Not really. In was common for some Germanic elites, like the Scandinavian countries or the Normans (with their habit of adding "Fitz-" to the patronymic. It was also common among Navarrese, Castillian and Aragonese noblemen, but it was soon lost in France and Frankish-influence countries like Occitania, Catalonia or Lombardy. Some parts of Italy retained a remnant of Roman anthroponymia, while some other parts kept a different way to indicate the clan or family, if not the profession.

Ah, I see.
That is just a small thing that shows the diversity of European countries, customs and cultures.
It is funny, then, to think that many Americans believe that Europe is a single country, like U.S.

- Darling, we are going on vacation!
- Great, honey! Where are we going?
- To Europe. To see Paris.
  :???:

Depends. That's why I said "especially commoners" - from all the sources I've read, I can't think of any commoner from this mod's time who had a double name (i.e. personal and patronimic name). The first such cases that I can remember are from the first Ottoman tax registers, which are obviously quite later on. The first such case, which however is not for a commoner, that I can remember, is of "Todor Duxov" (note the suffix -ov, which indicates precisely such a descent and is the common one we use today), IIRC the brother of Knyaz Boris I (mid-late IX c.).
Of course, family names were used by the nobles since quite early times (f.e. Georgi Sursuvul, Teodor Sigritsa - early X c. nobles) and the descendants of rulers also used dynastic names (f.e. Asen, Shishman, Terter etc., we've already talked in PMs about one certain Ioan Komnin Asen Shishman in the mid-XIV c.). But commoners at that time seem to have simply designated themselves with single names - f.e. you can see such an example in this list of Bulgarian slaves from the late XIV c. (number 52, in 58 you can see even later cases and my village's name  ), though I've also read one example from Byzantine times (i.e. 1018-1185) where a Bulgarian woman had to give her child to the local priest and in the document she simply writes "I, Dobrina, gave my child to the priest...", i.e. used a single personal name for herself.
Of course, they could still bear nicknames in addition to their personal name (f.e. Petar Delyan) or only nicknames in some cases (Bardokva/Lahanas for Tsar Ivailo) or, of course, in order to differentiate between each other they could sometimes use patronimic or professional names (f.e. "- I saw Ivan today. - Which Ivan? The carpenter? - No, Petar's Ivan [in which case it would be something like Ivan Petrin, Ivan Petrinski, Ivan Petrov, Petrinio Ivan etc]"), but in most cases they seem to have used a single name. You can see the double-names for commoners appearing in the early Turkish times, f.e. here (number 4).

Where on earth did you dug out the slave list!? I mean, really...  It is hard to find a mention of some lord, let alone a slave.
*Chelopechani village, Krivina village, Zhelyava village, Ponor village...* Found it!
Well, the guys in the second list didn't have those names for too long, it says it is a list of the people converting to Islam.

But for ruling class, we had a different custom. In Serbia, the princes and kings were the one who didn't used last names. It was only Prince Stefan, King Stefan, King Stefan, King Stefan, Tsar Stefan... and... well... the Nemanjich dynasty were all Stefan's.

Speaking of last names and ruling classes, in the middle ages, the Nemanjich dynasty wasn't known as Nemanjich dynasty. It is a ''invention'' of 17th century to better keep a track of the dynasty members. As I said, before, if they did have last names, they would be their fathers.

Yes, BUL and SER have a very similar las names, only we have that bonus IĆ.

Ha, ha! I laughed my ass of reading this part of your article:
''By the grace of God Stefan, King of Serbia, Dioclea, Zachulmia, Zeta, Albania and the Primorie, and ruler of no small part of the Kingdom of Bulgaria, and Lord of almost all Romania. ''
No small part of Bulgaria? Almost all Romania? What kind of titles are those?
I bet 1000 denars that, when he used to write letters to some Serbian nobles or clergy, he refered to himself as King of this, and that, and... Bulgaria and Romania. Without that ''no small part'' and stuff.

You can see it in the link. It's one of those documents which are rarely used for general history and few people come to know about them, if they're not published in a bigger book like the linked one. Unfortunately, I don't even have an idea if the whole slave-list of that Manolo Braschiani can be found somewhere online or in a book.

Yeah, and most of ours (and the Wallachians) were Ioans. In the Serbian case I know it's a matter of that family tradition... "slava", right? In our case it seems it's more like a name-title though.

We've used the -ic too (f.e. Petar Bogdan Bakshic), but today it's mostly fallen out of favour (as well as the -ski and -in; the -ov/-ev dominates).

The "no small part" means "not a small part", i.e. a rather big part (which in his case is mostly Macedonia). And Romania in those times was not the modern Romania (in those times Wallachia and Moldavia), but Byzantium.
As for the "king of Bulgaria" - he was in far too good terms with the Bulgarian court (heck, thanks to it he was even crowned as tsar), so he wouldn't risk claiming such a full title. Especially since the Hungarians actually laid such claims and used "king of Bulgaria" in their titles.

Yes, Slava.  Before, it was more of a religious nature. Today, unfortunately, it is a celebration with a lot of people, galons of alcohol, tons of roasted food, all in favor of a house Saint... Yeah, right...

Yes, yes, I understood it right away what he means under no small part. Also, I know what Romania was, I am not some average low level peasant, speaking of which, in Dušan's letters to Serbs and all Western countries, he calls himself Emperor of Serbs and Romania. However, when he writes a letter in Greek (to the Byzantines), he calls himself Tsar of Serbs and Romanians.[/b] It seems that, as long as Constantinople was standing, no person could have been called King of Romania, except for Byzantine Emperor. You can call yourself King of Romanians, because, there are a lot of Greeks (Romanians) living in your country, but not King of Romania.

Yeah, he was in good terms, they crowned him, they supplied his wife, and all he wanted was one thing - Consantinople.
Hah, king Louis of Hungaria called himself king of Serbs, even during Dušan's reign, so, no surprise there, they loved to exaggarate.
