Sergeant Knight at Arms
Assume that your army is suddenly plagued by a strange disease. Sooner or later all your horses die. And they die, and die... you cannot field mounted units!

So, what would be your first choice of units regarding front line and ranged support? This topic is meant for more than just "huskarls rulz" guys. Keep in mind balance, tactics and even dinars! Ok... some "rule of cool" also lol!

Are dismounted cavalry allowed? Because when I'm playing native, I play Swadians or else just roam about with a mercenary company.

Actually, I just couldn't cope with watching Swadians try to get by without cavalry.

Mercenaries, then. I'm fond of mercenary cavalry, but two thirds hired blades and a third mercenary crossbowmen would do. Not terribly exciting, but hired blades are solid, at least, if rather expensive. Perhaps a handful of dismounted caravan guards to have the occasional voulge being swung about (that's what they carry, right?).

Rhodok spearmen, Nord infantry, and Vaegir archers.

Sea Raiders are pretty good too.

And by the way: "huskarls rulz" guys.

Dismounted units can count. By the way, other armies field cavalry, take that in consideration folks.

Ok, so only you are without cavalry?

Then I'd focus mainly on Vaegir Marksmen, some Huskarls and some Rhodok Sharpshooters. And perhaps some companions too.

And I'd put some points into Athletics ; )

Well... What would you expect from Rhodok?

Yea, either army of Rhodok Sergeants and Sharpshooters or full army of Vaegir Marksmen...

Ill max out persuasion and use 17 heroes. I will then bash my head into desk because I can't even win a battle without getting SOMEONE who will complain about what someone else did in the last fight...

If you can capture sea raiders or release them from another lord, they are very cost-effective. For only 9 gold pieces a week (on leadership 7), you get a solid infantry unit with backup throwing weapons, axes, swords, shields, and medium armor, without even having to train them.

You should try playing an infantry-only game for a laugh.

I did, and it was fun for a while. I didn't even use archers. Generally I had to have my troops approach the enemy using gullies and depressions in the land to keep out of sight. Most of the time, I found that Swadian Knights etc didn't charge if they couldn't see you. Then, after getting close, I'd wait for them to appear over a rise and then attack while they were still moving at 5mph. The same thing worked against enemy archers - if you waited behind a rise in the land, you could minimise casualties.

If there is a second cavalry charge after you've wiped out the van, then you have to deal with as many of the enemy's first wave as possible before standing close to break the second charge (which unlike the first one, will be coming at full pelt).

So it can be done. Eventually though you start pining for some variety and start recruiting archers and cavalry again (when the plague has passed ).

An army of sea raiders and forest bandits, now that's a thought!
forest bandits is what I use in a certain mod that allows you to 'recruit' them. Otherwise Vaegir marksmen slaughter their way through everything pretty fine. Can't remember when was the last time I had an army with a significant number of horses in it(except, of course, for the looted war horses in my inventory )

Eh your back,

You can't go wrong in the field with 50 vaegir marksmen, with my 15 companions who are all heavyly armed and can use bows as well, you don't see many people getting close.

especially with the voulges and great swords at the ready

Rhodok Sergeants, preferably with glaives. And some Rhodok spearmen for more effectiveness against cavalry.
Supported by Rhodok sharpshooters (for accurate shots and backup infantry) and Vaegir marksmen (for pressing fire)
